Christians Call for Boycott of New TV Show 'Black Jesus'

"The Boondocks" creator Aaron McGruder has come up with a new controversial comedy show entitled "Black Jesus" for the Adult Swim network.

A trailer (below) for the TV program portrays Jesus as an African-American living in the predominantly black city of Compton, California, which is part of Los Angeles County.

Black Jesus, played by Gerald "Slink" Johnson, tries to spread love and kindness while people ask him for winning lottery numbers and gang bangers harass his neighborhood. Black Jesus occasionally curses, but his profanity is bleeped out, notes The Christian Post.

However, Christian-based activist group One Million Moms and Pastor David A. Rodgers of the House of Prayer for All Nations Ministries in Chicago want the show pulled before it airs.

Yes we all know He must fit the blue eyed blond hair template and any deviation from that is offensive to some. Gimme a break. Let's see, a person in the ME 2000 years ago would tend to kinda look like...other people in he ME 2000 years ago...which is not too different than how people in the ME look now....

Shouldn't those with their panties in a wad focus on the message and dispense with obsessing what what He looked like?

Gee, I wonder why they didn't go with "Black Mohamed".

I'm sure it could be just as funny as "Black Jesus"--of course they might then be looking as something a little more attention worthy, than a boycott.

I doubt the "black" thing is the problem. If you read what the show is about, I think it's probably the comedic (sacreligious) nature that they are objecting to. I remember when I was a flight student in Pensacola a cartoon called God, the Devil, and Bob came on (which I thought was funny) and was immediately driven off the air by offended Christians, much to my personal dismay.

Speaking for self, I've always thought that religious humor was funny (movies such as The Life of Brian and Wholly Moses!, for instance). But to the protesting Christians' credit, look at what they're doing: calling for a peaceful boycott. No one is threatening to blow up the studio or murder the artists in the middle of the streets. Do we think every group would be mature enough to act that way if others had the affront to make fun of their religion?

Most folks I know think of Jesus as a Jew-from the mid east-while I am not sure if he is darker skinned or just dark skin, I have never thought of Him as blonde hair blue eyed.

As a very conservative Christian I have no problem with a black Jesus, I do have problems with this particular portrayal which simply means I would not watch it.

Sounds like the boycott is because the show looks horrible.

And nothing the Boondocks guy has done has ever been funny.

My guess is that concerned Christian groups should just blanket ban Adult Swim, I dont think they'd enjoy much of the other programming either.

Most young christians I know enjoy quite a bit of Adult Swim, or at least have at some point, including myself. I was a fan of Space Ghost Coast to Coast and The Brak Show, although I think technically both of those shows arrived before it technically became"Adult Swim." Although, I haven't really watched it very much since its early years I can't speak for many over 30, but I doubt that's the demographic Adult Swim aims for anyway.

I think if your statement was "concerned Christian groups over 35" it may be a little more appropriate, but perhaps under 35 Christians wouldn't really fall under the category of "concerned christian groups."

I didnt know groups had ages. My comment was directed towards the groups that tend to be concerned with appropriate TV programming & the culture wars, not Christians in general.

Knowing the fat white liberal media, this will probably get more coverage than the Gosnell trial.

I'd venture a guess the people that would watch this show aren't the same people that would participate in a Christian led boycott.

And atheists will mock religious ideas out of personal insecurity.

Quite a few years ago I watched some program where they tried to recreate what Jesus may have actually looked like. The result reminded me of a bald Ali Baba.

Lets focus on the things we can agree on, like that he probably wore comfortable robes and sandals.

I assume that the pilot episode explains what the hell Jesus, white or black, is doing living today in California. I could see why he might want to come down to California to audition for the lead role in the next Jesus movie. But taking up permanent residence doesn't fit into any biblical scenario that I am aware of. It can't be the Second Coming, since the Bible makes it pretty clear that that will be a well-broadcast, clouds of glory, Earth-changing event.

You're asking for sound logic and reasoning coming from an animated show.
