Could have used him tonight for sure. PY and Yegeutte needed some rest.
Really could use Harris too. Actually hoping to see Harris somehow and save Walker for next year!
You're not seriously suggesting we redshirt him are you? I don't know what Harris' status is right now, but Walker will play and be a difference-maker this year.
According to billy CW is far off from being ready. 'He is a High School basketball player that hasn't played competitive basketball since Feb' Billy says more in the postgame here:
Still could use him at 5 min a game and work up to 20ish
I think we could expect Walker to be a little bit better than Billy wants him to believe he is. Im sure he is way, way behind as far as learning Billy's system, but I bet he has the raw athletic ability to give us 5-10 good minutes immediately. If nothing else he is a good 5 fouls and a few extra breathers for Yeguete and Young.
Billy's MO is to downplay expectations on young players. This is for their benefit.
So what is holding him up from getting on the court and any idea on the timetable?
Chris Walker didn't come here to redshirt.
If he redshirts he will probably never play a minute on the court for us. Kids with his ability and explosiveness play and play a lot. There will be many blown assignments while he is out there but he will more than make up for it. I can't imagine Billy will play him a bunch of minutes early on but by February I don't think there will be many empty seats in the O Dome.
Harris is no longer even a slim option ...
Well, it's pretty clear from that interview that Billy D expects very little, if anything from Chris Walker.
He also made it clear that Hill has a long, long road to travel to be able to compete against high quality experienced guards.
We all know that it is very rare for true frosh, even of the highest calibre, to contribute a large amount for the Gators, except in the early years with Miller, Haslem & Dupay. Beal was a real exception. Cali, on the other hand, uses almost exclusively true frosh. Even Polythress, is a backup now, although he started last year. I assume that the difference in those coaching styles is that Billy D is trying to teach his young players to be quality human beings as well as quality, team-based roundball players. Quite a different philosophy than Cali, and many others, to be sure.
It is not easy playing for Billy D, but those who persevere and allow him to guide their development are tributes to Society.
I'm guessiing Billy is downplaying Walkers "readiness". I bet it's somewhere between what he's saying, and what we're hoping.
I'm sure Billy expects something from Walker. Just how much is anyone's guess at this point. By March he should be an important ingredient to how far we go in the tourney.
The memphis game and presumably the fresno state game will count toward his suspension for the trip right? The ncaa isn't going to take their sweet time clearing him and then suspend on top of that right? Logically that makes sense but we're dealing with the ncaa.
I think this is a good way of putting it. Walker will get time, but the staff will ease him in (as they have with most freshmen over the years) and use him sparingly at first, then accelerate the minutes as he gets comfortable and is needed. Make no mistake about it, missing the non-conference slate was devastating for Walker because that is where you play teams that aren't preparing for you as extensively or throwing as much at you as in conference play, while you also tend to get some pretty average to poor opponents where there is little risk of freshmen mistakes coming back to bite you. But Walker will play and will increase his minutes as time goes by, though much of that depends upon how he digests what we are doing.
It's evident that this class wasn't quite as strong as everyone thought it would be. Wiggins, Harrison, and Randle have really impressed. Everyone else has a long way to go, IMO. I'm not sure I see Hill leaving next year, like a lot of people sort of expected to happen.
You mean Parker, not Harrison, right?
im assuming you meant parker, but i don't know how any of us can see whether hill will be leaving after this year just yet. its fun to speculate though
If this was Kentucky or Duke or UNC, the NCAA would have resolved this issue months ago.
