I'm not shocked by this move. The only bigger move they could have made is somehow snagging UW-alum Jim Mora from UCLA. I think this is as much of a 'splash hire' as one could expect to make at UW. Similar to the Mike Leach hire at Wash. St.

I don't mean to diminish the program, but that in its current state, it's not upper echelon. Petersen was being discussed for those types of gigs.

So much for the contingent that believed that Petersen would never leave Boise. This makes me question how hard other schools actually pursued him, including UF, during our last search. Maybe he was like the hot girl that no one seriously asked out because it was assumed she would say no.

It was said after the whole conference realignment last year Peterson was ready to leave Boise because he realized he couldn't play for a National Title

I don't disagree with your assessment of the quality of UW's facilities, fans, and AD. But winning the Pac 10 (shouldn't we call it the Pac 12) and an NC there in the current college football world is a real stretch. I don't doubt they can have a magical season or two, ala Duke football this year. But sustaining that success for a long stretch of time at UW is going to be difficult.

He was going to stay on the west coast how many job do you consider upper echelon in the west? Many coaches would have told you before this year Washington was a better job than UCLA

We'll see how this all plays out, but if true, I'm thinking that UW got the better end of this coach swap.

Um Washington in the Pac 12 is not like Duke in the ACC. I agree it will take a nice run but who are the monsters in the pac 12? Look who is in the Pac 12 championship game

UW is a great school. Just because they're on the West Coast, don't diminish that it's a quality job. Remember UW was the team to end Miami's record home win streak in 1994.

I would have expected him to leave for a school like USC. He could have any college job.

Well done by Washington. USC would have done better to get him. Weird.

I think Washington netted the better coach in the end.

I think of this kind of like the Spurrier hire at USCe and think it will produce similar results.
Peterson will, in my opinion, have Washington competing for Pac 12 titles and BCS bowls.
