$180k is a bargain. He could’ve easily commanded a couple mill based on the championship and revenue he brought them.

Ummmmm. This was before NIL. 180K in 2009 was a ton of money for an "amateur" - especially since it was a MAJOR NCAA violation. I know that you have been twisting yourself into a pretzel defending him but come on man, really?

He made that program millions. The $180k was money well spent, Auburn hasn’t won anything since he left

2 years after Cam they won 3 games and their coach got fired. That program should be thanking and paying Cam still.

Folks here like to be sanctimonious about Cam when we kept the likes of AHern. Had Cam stayed, Urban would have had his perfect QB and have also stayed, changing our history.

The Cam/Urban combo would’ve led UF to its first undefeated season and another national championship and given us another Heisman winner. No would care about him cheating on tests lol

Yeah it’s crazy how quickly they fell off after he left. Coaches got exposed too.

Not really. Cam was the perfect QB for Meyer's offense. John Brantley, solid Gator though he is, was not.

I remember the rationalization here in 2010. "John is like Leak, except he has a stronger arm and better running skills," as though Leak's QB IQ and vast SEC experience was easily transferable to anyone.

Nah, Skink, Meyer's dismal 2010 season wasn't due primarily to Urban's mental health, Addazio, or other factors. He simply didn't have his type of quarterback.

    Just IMO...

Oh I don’t doubt for a minute that we’d have done better in 2010 with Cam under center. But Cam did it to himself (and us). I was just pushing back against you referring to us being “sanctimonious” regarding Cam. Cam was at least a 2-time asshole, cheating and stealing.

Hernandez got in trouble more after he left UF - he may have been a thug, but to our knowledge he wasn’t caught cheating or stealing from fellow students - to the extent that he was looking at being thrown out of school.

Meyer certainly looked the other way with his players, but Newton screwed up to a level that Meyer couldn’t have kept him even if he wanted to.

    Maybe we’re arguing different points.

So you approve of obvious cheating as long as it ends in a championship. Got it. Sheesh.

I’m not naive enough to believe that Auburn/Cam Newton was
the only football program cheating in the pre-NIL era lol

So typical exoneration of your preferred “just because everybody else is doing it” Complete idiocy.

I simply cannot understand your mindset. If others are doing it, that makes it OK? Pure bullshit.

I’m perfectly okay with players (especially transcendent ones like Cam Newton) getting paid for their talents, whether it was in the NIL era or not. I wish he would’ve commanded $2 million for his services because he was worth it. If that makes me a horrible, evil person then so be it.
