The New York State Racing Commission will probably be called on to make a decision whether to allow horses to wear breathing strips in the June 7th Belmont Stakes race.

This race is the first at a mile-and-a-half for Chrome and presumably all or most of the other horses in the race, so the difference the strips could make is no small controversy, especially if it gives the bluebloods of the sport their excuse to diminish the accomplishments of a horse owned by people who can't even call themselves nouveau riche yet.

Similar to Kentucky Basketball bloodbloods wanting to diminish the "triple crown" that UF claimed this year, with wins in in Lexington, Gainesville and Atlanta. Rather than hating "California Chrome", they hate "Florida Dome". Interestingly, I saw a UK message board post a few days ago referring to UF Basketball as "new money".

The nose strip has been allowed. Here is an article with details. My guess is that horse racing really wants to have a Triple Crown winner to try to bring in some fans under the age of 80. The ‘sport’ is literally dying, well their fans are.
