So those of you who have successfully gained lots of muscle and put on strength, how do you do it?

I am 43 with a full-time professional job and it is hard for me to eat enough protein on a consistent basis. If I get busy at work, which I have the last couple of weeks, I've dropped a couple of pounds. I work out with heavy weights for me at Crossfit classes, usually 6 times a week. My back squat max is 150% of my body weight, front squat is more than 125% of my body weight, and I can clean and jerk 110% of my body weight. But I've having trouble making gains above that even though I'm lifting heavy.

What is the best way for me to supplement to put on more muscle weight and strength? (Particularly given the difficulty I have eating enough protein).

I work 60+ hours every week (largely exacerbated by my use of this site). I get 200g of protein a day, mostly through food but with a few whey shakes here and there.

At 43 you probably aren't going to be packing on tons of muscle, but if all that's necessary is:

    - progressive load weight training of some kind

    - caloric surplus

I work 55 hours a week outside in the sun 5-6 days a week. What I like to do and it's hard is eat my body weight in protein. It's hard, but bring a protein shake, or a couple protein bars. It definitely gets tough but get in that habit and it will become second nature.

Naturally at 43 it's hard to gain muscle or lean muscle mass, usually between 30-35 men's bodies naturally start to slowly produce less and less testosterone. So you might find it difficult to gain any kind of results, so there are other ways that are not "illegal" some over the counter products that naturally help your body produce more testosterone. What I would try first is eating protein filled small meals 5-6 times a day, so your constantly feeding your body the protein it need for recovery. Buy an amino acid supplement, some don't believe in it, but I do and it has worked.

If you can not gain any mass, and are just losing weight then that's when I would go to a doctor and get blood test done just to see where your at. As for now just eat more protein, if you can provide yourself with some replacements like a few small meal bars, proteins bars, or protein shakes. All based on my knowledge and opinion.

Yup, that's exactly what I said. "Precursor" means "one of the things used making". It does not mean "partially turns into".

Thanks for looking it up, that's all we were asking the sports-nutrition pseudo-science crowd to do!

Iron ore is a precursor to a car too. If I make a big enough pile of iron ore, will it turn into a car?

I'll strongly suggest to you that the arginine/NO relationship works the same way.

But yes, this is hair splitting. I completely agree that its one of the things that your body has to have to make NO, but there are of others too, your body isn't just making arginine into NO.

Yep. I have a mild allergy to dairy products so no whey, and already have bitch tits, so high doses of soy is out. This carnivore stuff is a godsend and it tastes awesome.

This we agree on. So I don't know what else to say, except that Arginine doesn't have just one function, it has several.

L-arginine is an amino acid, whereas Nitric Oxide (NO2) is a gas, a by product of l-arginine metabolism with a 3 second lifespan. There are a myriad of functions in the body that are incapable of taking place without Nitric Oxide. L-arginine is the body's chief source of Nitric Oxide.

L-arginine has been identified as a blind amino acid, and when separated out from it's brother and sister amino acids behaves differently and confers upon the user different benefits than would otherwise be had in it's protein form, ...one of which is increased production of Nitric Oxide.

Uh oh, don't say that to loudly or OBOB might here you and read you the "real science" riot act on Soy.

Yeah I love the stuff. it also digests far easier/faster than whey protein ever did.
