    Not to derail the thread any more than it already has been, but does anyone take any pre-workout drinks (like Supercharge NO)? I've always been skeptical, but some of my friends swear by them.

    Just take arginine... Pre workouts are good but they're just loaded with creatine, sugar, and caffeine... Messes my stomach up, and once you start you don't want to stop... But if you do decide to, the best I've had is assault

    Yeah, well I work out late because of work so I really dont want to be wide awake at 3 am from some liquid crack. For a while I have just been drinking whey isolate shakes before and after workouts with a scoop of glutamine powder. Im thinking about scrapping the glutamine since i probably get enough from food.

    I've taken quite a few of them. Arginine/L-Arginine by itself is largely ineffective for "pump," most of the pre-workouts are about sugar & caffeine. The "pump" is largely dictated by blood glucose.

    If all you care about is the pump effect, just get some glycerine. It's dirt cheap and believe me, it works.

    Really what you want is vasodilation, and there are a number of things you can use for that. Glycerine (or glycerol) is a vasodilator and is not a stimulant. And it costs basically nothing. Give it a shot, the only downside is as it's a triglyceride it's impossible to mix in water.

    Yea arginine after a while goes to crap, I never tried the glycerine?

    Which, those sorts of supplements - the dirt cheap ones - are the only ones I'd mess with. Oral L-arginine has failed to show an increase in NO production in studies, so why spend more than a nickel on it?

    Like I said, I've been working out since I was 12 and have seen so many 'sure things' come and go. It's amusing.

    Just a couple of years ago, my former training partner - who was already bigger than most people - spent $120 on Leukic and some other Muscletech stuff that is now laughed at.

    Andro, I remember that one. Took it when I first started working out ... I'm really lucky that had no negative impact on me ... was available at Wal-Mart.

    Raspberry ketones, velvet bean extract, synephrine, african mango, hoodia, glutamine, arginine ...

    Same dance, new day. The industry preys on people looking for shortcuts. Don't take them. In the time I've been working out, only creatine, protein and ephedrine* have proven to be worthwhile useful legal* supplements. And you can get by without any of them.

    The last pre-workout supplement i took was Ultimate Orange (with ephedra) back in the 90's, and I definitely saw results...too bad you cant get that stuff any more.

    I take Arginine Pyroglutamate, but Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate or Arginine Ethyl Ester are all good too. But L-Arginine doesn't help much because most of it get lost in the small intestine.

    Arginine is responsible for the NO pump and real energy you get to help you workout harder, among other things is helps with.

    Don't go doing that sugar and caffeine crap, you crash and it adds zero real value to your overall health. It's junk/poison with no scientific basis to back it up as a benefit to you. It's the poor mans attempt to get energy for a workout.

    So you're a try it out first and then read about it later kind of hit-and-miss guy?

    I like to read as much as possible on anything before I even think about taking it.

    I'm glad to say that I've never tried those failed supplements that you've poisoned yourself with. :happy:
