A candidate? ABSOLUTELY!!!! If Petrino does well this year, he will be a candidate for EVERY major job in the country.

Whether or not he'd actually hire him is very questionable. I tend to think it's unlikely, but the reality is that if Muschamp doesn't pan out, Foley is going to need to hit a home run with his next hire. I never would have expected any SEC team to hire Kiffen either but Saban brought him on as OC.

I am not doubting there will be a contingent of fans desiring Petrine, but let's face it, look at the crew that wanted champs head last year. The bottom line is petrino ain't coaching at Florida.

I don't think Foley would show interest in anyone that could smear the Universities name.

I think it's Foley's (or any other AD's) RESPONSIBILITY to consider any and all candidates who he believes can help the program. Like I said, I think it's kind of doubtful that he'd ever actually hire Petrino, but I think Foley wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't at least consider Petrino as a candidate.

Petrino may have some real moral and judgement issues and he may be a liar, but to the best of my knowledge, he hasn't ever done anything illegal. And as far as I'm aware, he's run a pretty clean program. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that I think Petrino SHOULD be be our next head coach if Muschamp doesn't pan out, or that I'd like him to coach my team. But I'm also not naive enough to think that if Foley honestly thinks one day that Petrino is clearly the guy to lead our program, that he's going to choose somebody he feels is truly inferior for moral reasons.

Exactly, lots of coaches are complete asshats, if they win and aren't embarrassing the school, nobody cares.

If he atoned for his sins I'd like to see what the New Petrino can do. Time will tell.

Ok. I just want them to beat FSU and MIA. They can lose the rest of their games.

You should hear in Arkansas how all the fans still defend him to this day

I heard it just yesterday as a matter of fact.

I really don't give a crap if our coach goes to church on Sunday's as long as he wins on Saturday's. I'm not looking for a nice guy to coach our Gators either.

I would have taken Petrino as coach this year as long as he agreed to not crash anymore motorcycles and not try to employ someone in exchange for sex. Hell, he should be smart enough to know he can get tail for a lot cheaper. Sex with coeds should be part of the perks of the position. AS LONG AS YOU WIN!!!

So you don't think the coach should be a good representative of the University?

But I thought you didn't care what the coach did as long as he won?

Wow.... sure glad you not Foley.

Man, AtlantaGator86 stole most of my post. I would add:

IF, again IF, Muschamp doesn't work out this year and Foley is looking to hire a new head coach, what will he be looking for? (And remember that Foley used up a lot of goodwill last year in keeping Muschamp so he can't miss again.) Based on a lot of the GC posters comments:

    1. Head Coaching Experience
    2. Track record of winning
    3. Proven ability to recruit
    4. Track record of winning

Who really fits that bill as of today?

    1. Bob Stoops - Unlikely to leave OU
    2. Art Briles - Would he leave Baylor? Can he compete outside of the Big 12?
    3. Patterson - No ties to the SEC or Florida recruiting
    4. Petrino - Free agent looking for his next big gig

Petrino would be in the discussion and maybe the best fit as he has been a head coach in the SEC and been competitive. He has off the field issues, but if Foley is worried enough about making sure he gets a winner, then Petrino would be the safest pick.

FYI - I think UL put Petrino in a bad position by not allowing him to have his own staff. You can't run a program without all of your coaches on board the same boat, and forcing a DC on him doesn't allow him to do that.

Petrino was apparently #2 on Foley's list after Urbz in 2004, but I doubt we would go in that direction. There is going to be another good coach out there without the baggage.
