Choke at Doke: 31-3 lead starting the 4th quarter, final score 31-31

Miami 2003: 33-10 lead in the 3rd quarter, final score 33-38 miami

My vote: f$u 94 -- uf had a better team than f$u; in 2003, miami was better than florida

In 1984, the Canes blew a 31-0 halftime lead to lose to Maryland 42-40. For years, that was the biggest comeback in NCAA history.

Yeah, I think OP should get a time out just for bringing it up.

Hey, OP, why don't you bring up the Nebraska game too!

Just kidding of course... but dang, leave that scab alone!

Sadly I was at both, the Miami game was a blast because we had really surprised everyone by coming out so strong and Chris Leak nearly tied it up at the end .
The '94 game was awful, depressing, sad

The Zooker was the MASTER of the "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" statement. Starting with that Miami game, the Gators lost 6 of 18 regular season games in the last two minutes. They were Miami (1:44 left), Ole Miss (1:10 left), and F$U (0:55 left) in '03 and Tennessee (0:06 left), LSU (0:27 left), and Mississippi State (0:32 left) in '04. Arkansas could have beaten us in '03 after we pulled out to a 26-7 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter and could have tied us in '04 at the end, but in both games they shot themselves in the foot.

My vote..94. It didnt start until 12 min. left in the game. The Celebrations had already started. Fans were already leaving. Then bang. The 03 game was basically killing them in the first half, and then getting killed in the second half using the famous Zooker Prevent D.

Make that 5 of 18. The Swindle doesn't count.

    C @ D.

In Miami, they were a better team. We were thin on the DL and just ran out of gas. Period.

Totally just blew it at Doak Campbell. Absolutely no excuse for that. To this day I can't believe Bobby didn't go for 2.

Choke at Doak was much worse because we were ranked higher than them and had a chance to get some serious payback for the last few years. Plus the intensity level of 90s Florida-FSU games was through the roof - it was the biggest game of the year every year.

when we went down to Miami in '03 nobody really expected us to even keep it close. It was a crappy loss and extremely typical of the Ron Zook era in many ways, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Choke.

Man, as Joseph Goebbels said, "Tell the same falsehood ehough, it eventually becomes the truth..."

Sorry, but that was Charlie Strong's defense. He called the plays and set the alignments. Not everything can be blamed on Zook, and he didn't micromanage Strong...

We fell behind when Ingle Martin had a concussion, and Strong put the Gator D into the prevent after Art Kehoe finally put Brock Berlin into the shotgun after trying to handjam Miami's under center system on him.

The combination of Martin's injury and Strong's prevent defense kept us from pulling off a major upset on a team that were double-digit favorites.

The 1994 game was FAR worse, because we were as good as FSU, led 31-3 going into the 4th quarter, then fell asleep on offense and defense, allowing them to come back to tie it. Of course, everyone blamed Bobby Pruett for it, but Spurrier was just as liable, if not more so, for his inept playcalling. to most of us, "The Choke at Doak" will always be a loss.

As for the other poster above, many of those 2-minute losses were not due to playcalling or decisions made. Chris Leak threw three INTs in the 4th quarter in his second start to lose to Eli Manning and a 10-win Ole Miss team, the Miss State game was lost due to a critical INT, followed by a last second 37-yard TD run by Jerius Norwood, the Tennessee game was lost due to Bobby Moreau's horrible PF call on Dallas Baker, and the Swindle was a travesty from start to finish. Corey Bailey and other DBs got turned around on deep pass plays as the seconds wound down. Pretty hard to blame coaches for that.

What one CAN blame the head coach for is the overall management of the program, and the results that follow reflect that. If the team does not perform to the expectations required, the coach gets fired, and deservedly so. Zook patently deserved to get canned, but not everything that happened bad on the field was because of his decisions. Charlie Strong had some green defenses to work with, and we often struggled with them.

Was Zook the DC in '94? And then the HC in 03?

edit: I see BP was DC. Gotcha.

FSU scored TDs with 13, 10, 5, and 2 minutes left in the game. Not that I have that memorized. Just a few well placed 1st downs would have changed the outcome.

I can't believe Bowden went for the tie- OT came in the next season.

The 03 loss to Miami was in a different league. They had played for the BCS title the previous 2 years whereas we were coming off an 8-5 season AND had lost Grossman and Jacobs. I hated to lose but there was some relief in not getting blown out.
