Refusal to make deals with patently untrustworthy people is not a failing. Anybody with will or intellect can look at the Senate bill and see all the outs in it through which any controlling Democrats can basically defang its enforcement mechanisms completely, all the ways in which it actually encourages future illegal crossing. So there is nothing Harry Reid, or Schumer and the "gang of 8" dems, or Obama, can say on the subject that can be trusted, sorry. They haven't earned it, in part by their own deeds, and in part because they are saddled with the frauds perpetrated by the Congressional Democrats in those famous 80's compromises.

I'd assume that anyone with an intellect would also see that in a system such as ours making crappy consessions (one of which is even including a trigger in the first place) is part of not making the perfect be the enemy of the good and achieving actual legislative victories, rather than pyrrhic moral ones.

Which is why a perfectly acceptable answer is to tell the whole thing to get stuffed. A bill that actually exacerbates a lot of the status quo problems is not worth passing solely because "we can't leave the status quo" alone.

Also why its a perfectly acceptable strategy is to pound the GOP as the party of "no," instead of one interested in participating in governance.

Passing crap-the-bed legislation for the sake of appearing to engage in governance, is not governance. An entire legislative session could go by without Congress passing more than one piece of legislation and they could still be said to have been doing their job perfectly well, and that is the only piece of legislation that Congress never passes anymore, a budget.

Actually, that is pretty much governance in this country, unless you happen to control a supermajority of Congress, WH, and a 5 votes on the SCOTUS.

I still think Rand Paul is the best candidate to represent the Republican Party in 2016.

If you want to win an election it always helps to alienate 47% of the voters before election day.
