Team started out with ground ball fielding practice. Powers, Deel & Larson at 1B; Turgeon, Bader & Reed at 2B; Tobias, Alonso & Sternagel at 3B; Martin, Shafer & Lombardozzi at short; catchers were Oren, Gushue & Mattson. Then they practiced defense vs the bunt with a runner on 1B.

Next was BP. They went in groups of 4 or 5 and did 4 sets each. First shortening up and hitting ground balls, then line drives, then to the center gaps and then yard. First group was Larson, Gushue, Turgeon, & Mattson. It was good to see Turgeon hitting more oppo field ground balls, and he hit 3 in a row out just inside the right pole. Gushue & Mattson also hit 1 out.
Next group was Fahrman, Kirksey, Bader & Lombardozzi (who needs a nickname so I don't have to type that out every time). As the guys finished each set of BP they went behind the cage and practiced bunting from a pitching machine, then did their next set of BP. Lombardozzi looks like a great bunter. Bader hit 3 out into the outfield stands.
Next were Oren, Alonso, Martin & Deel. They all looked pretty good and Alonso hit 2 out. Last group was Shafer, Reed, Sternagel, Tobias & Roberson. They also looked good and Tobias hit 1 out.

The guys did infield/outfield practice next with Fahrman on 1B; Martin & Lombardozzi at Short; Alonso, Powers & Sternagel on 3B; Bader in CF, Tobias & Larson in LF; Reed in RF; and Gushue & Mattson catching.

Last was a scrimmage. I stayed for 2 innings then had to go. Orange fielded first.
    P - Shore
    C - Mattson
    1B - Fahrman
    2B - Lombardozzi
    3B - Sternagel
    SS - Martin
    LF - Larson
    CF - Reed
    RF - Deel

Tobias batted 1st for Blue and he hit a nice double over the outfielder's head. Turgeon hit a single. Bader flied out to C and Tobias came in. Shafer struck out swinging. Gushue popped out to 3B. Blue fielded:

    P - Puk
    C - Gushue
    1B - Roberson
    2B - Tobias
    3B - Alonso
    SS - Turgeon
    LF - Shafer
    CF - Bader
    RF - Rhodes

For Orange Martin grounded out to 3B, Reed went down looking & Larson grounded out to 3B.

    Inning 2 for Blue:
Alonso flied out to center, Puk hit a single to the right gap, Roberson grounded out to short, Oren singled and then was tagged out at 2B when Tobias hit a grounder to short.

    For Orange:
Sternagel hit a single, Mattson hit a single, next batter (missed that number) flied out to right. Mattson stole second and a bad throw resulted in Sternagel coming in and Mattson on 3B. Lombardozzi walked and stole 2B. Deel hit a single and Mattson came in. Kirksey hit into a 6-3 DP.

For the new pitchers, Puk started like gangbusters then lost some control. Shore didn't start with good location, but he settled in the next inning. Just freshmen stuff. Overall they both looked good.

 It was good to see Gator baseball! Sully took a walk through the stands to say Hi to everyone that was there. I thought that was a nice touch.

I also picked up a pretty good sunburn, so I won't be going today. No practice Mon or Tue this week, but I'll try to go by after work Wed & Thurs.

It'll be interesting to see if the freshmen can just hit their way into the lineup. You expect the older guys to be more polished in their overall games, but from the scouting reports, guys like Puk, Sternagel, Alonso, and Reed might just be better hitters than the older players in front of them. We all know this team desperately needs some bats.

OR maybe the competition will make the older players raise their game. Win - Win situation and it will be nice for the coaches to at least have options this year.

Options will be huge for this team, this year should be very interesting. I'm really excited to see how both Whitson and Kish come back this year. Both are very talented and have a chance to have great years. Also excited to see Bader/Martin in their second year, a healthy Tobias should be a solid contributor. I'm looking forward to a successful year.

Well, hell, 5220 I haven't gone over there yet! Trying to sneak out of work a little early and get there for the scrimmage. Tomorrow's starts later so I should see most of that one.

    Scrimmage report for Wed, 10/16.

I arrived at about 5:10 just as they were starting scrimmage. Orange was on the field as follows:
    P #22 Whitson
    C #29 Fahrman
    1B #32 Shore
2B #38 Lombo (Thanks for the suggestion. I did hear the guys calling him Lombo today).
    3B #44 Sternagel
    SS #12 Martin
    LF #66 Larson
    CF #23 Reed
    RF #26 Deel

I don't think Orange changed this line up the entire time, but I may have missed a substitution. NOTE: Ss = strike swinging, and Sc = strike called. Results of Blue batting:

#20 Alonso B/B/B/Ss/Ss - Out on a ground ball to 1B, covered by the P. I made a note that Karsten was throwing HARD.
    #10 Puk Sc/Sc/B - Ground out to 2B
#9 Roberson - Flew out to Center
#11 Tobia B/B - Flew out to Center. Nice running catch by Reed. He can cover some ground and will challenge Bader for that spot if he can hit.

Next inning, Orange changed the Pitcher to #25 Hanhold.
#11 Tobias - Flew out to Center
#2 Turgeon Sc/F/B/B/B/F - Single to shallow left
#8 Bader F/Sc (On this throw Turgeon stole 2B. The throw was high.)/B/B/B/F/F/Sc - struck out
    #16 Shafer F/Sc/B/Ss - struck out.

    Next inning, Hanhold still pitching.
#17 Gushue (hitting left) B/B - Towering homer to the right of the score board. It went so high I had doubts it would go, but it was way out.
    #20 Alonso F/B/F/Sc - struck out
#10 Puk - reaches on E4 (through the wickets)
#9 Roberson Sc/B - grounds out to 3B. Puk to 2B. Nice play by Sternagel rushing the ball and throwing on the run. I'm calling it - we have depth at 3B!
#11 Tobias Sc/B/Ss - Singles to left gap. Puk comes in, but Tobias is tagged out trying to get back to 1B after he over-ran.

Next inning, #37 Shaun Anderson in to pitch.
#2 Turgeon B/F/Sc/B/F/F - Singles to shallow center
#8 Bader B/Sc/B/F (Somewhere in here Turgeon is picked off 1B. I can hear the groans now! But wait.) Bader grounds out to 2B
#16 Shafer B/B/F/B - flies out to Center

    Next inning, Anderson still pitching.
    #17 Gushue B - Singles to right/center
    #20 Alonso - hits into a 4/6/3 DP
    #10 Puk Sc/B/S - Doubles to left/center
#9 Roberson B/B/F/Sc/B - walks, then is picked off 1B. Now I realize Anderson has one hell of a move and surprises these guys BAD. I mean they are way off base and no chance to make it back. I hope he can do this against opposing teams.
#11 Tobias B/F/Sc - went no further because Roberson was picked off.

Last inning, #41 Austin Kirksey pitching.
#11 Tobias Sc/F/B/F - flies out to Center
    #2 Turgeon B/Sc/B/B/Sc/B - walks
#8 Bader B/B/Sc/F - flies out to Center
#16 Shafer B/Sc - Grounds out to 3B. Sternagel jumper over in front of Short, slid, and made the throw.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

OK, here's what happened on the other side. Blue was fielding:
    P #15 Young
    C #27 Gushue
    1B #10 Puk
    2B #11 Tobias
    3B #20 Alonso
    SS #2 Turgeon
    LF #16 Shafer
    CF #8 Bader
    RF #4 Carmichael

At some point Tobias moved to LF and #27 Rhodes played 2B. Someone else appeared in RF because it was a double digit number, but I missed it. Here's how the Orange batting went:

    #12 Martin B/Sc/B/F/B/Sc - struck out
#23 Reed Sc/B/B - flies out to right
    #66 Larson B/F/B/Ss/Ss - struck out

Next inning - Young still pitching
    #44 Sternagel B/Sc/B - Grounds out to 3B
    #29 Fahrman B/Sc - Grounds out to 1B, covered by P
#33 Mattson B/Ss/Ss - oops missed a pitch, but he was an out

Next inning - #24 Harris pitching
#38 Lombo (batting left) Sc - Triples down the right line
    #32 Shore B/Ss/Sc/Ss - strikes out
#12 Martin - grounds out to 2B. Runner in.
#23 Reed (batting left) Sc/F - Grounds out to P.

Next inning - Harris still pitching
#66 Larson F/B/B/F/F -Singles to right gap. Dive by 2B misses the ball, but it's not judged an E.
#44 Sternagel B/F/F/B/B - Reaches 2B on E5. Nice stop on the ball, but the throw is really wild. Larson to 3B.
#29 Fahrman B/Sc - grounds out to 1B. Larson scores. Sternagel on 3B.
#33 Mattson - hits a towering fly to Center. Bader makes the best throw home I've ever seen by a Gator CF but the runner slides, gets his foot in, and beats it. Gushue did a good job fielding it too. Place went crazy for both great plays.
    #38 Lombo B/B/B/Ss/Ss - singles to right/center
#32 Shore Ss - doubles to right corner
#12 Martin B - triples to left wall (Tobias should not play outfield). 2 Runners in.
    #23 Reed B/F/F/Sc - strikes out

Last inning - Blue pitcher is #45 Alex Hagner
    #66 Larson Sc/B/F/B/B/Sc - strikes out
#44 Sternagel Sc - Grounds out to 3B. Nice play by Alonso.
    #29 Fahrman B/B - Grounds out to 3B.

    That's it!

Nader has a chance to have a really good year. Base running mishaps are a bit alarming.

    Scrimmage Practice, Thursday, 10/17

I got there and saw some warm ups and base running practice, but really tonight was about the game. Orange vs Blue all 9 innings.

First some roster notes. Don Norris is no longer a coach and Buddy Monroe is now the 3rd Assistant Coach. We have no seniors. There are two RS Juniors (Whitson and Kish), but no official seniors.

    Blue fielded as follows:
    P #10 Puk - each pitcher did 3 innings
C #17 Gushue - #9 Roberson took over at the end
1B #9 Roberson - Puk took over here in the 4th when he was done pitching
    2B #11 Tobias
    3B #20 Alonso
    SS #2 Turgeon
    LF #8 Bader
    CF #16 Shafer
LF #27 Rhodes (who did not bat)

    Orange batting results are:
    #12 Martin Sc/F/F/F/F/Sc - Struck out
#23 Reed (batting right) B/Sc - Ground out to Short
#66 Larson Sc - Singled to shallow center
#44 Sternagel Sc/B/Sc - Ground out to Short. Great sliding catch & throw by Turgeon.

    #29 Fahrman - Ground out to 2B
    #33 Mattson - Ground out to 3B
    #38 Lombo B/Sc/B/Sc/B/B - Walks
#32 Shore B/Sc - Single to left gap. Lombo to 2B.
    #12 Martin Sc/B/B/Sc/Ss - Struck out

#23 Reed B/Sc/F - Reaches on E6 (my judgment. Turgeon bobbled a grounder up the middle)
#66 Larson Sc/B - Reaches on a bunt down the 3B line. Orange was very good at this. You'll see it several more times.
    #44 Sternagel - Hits into a 6-4-3 DP. Turgeon to 3B.
#29 Fahrman Sc/F/B - Ground out to Short.

#4 Carmichael comes in to pitch. Good to see him out there again. He had good velocity but trouble locating. Hopefully it comes together.

    #33 Mattson B/B/B/Sc/B - Walks
#38 Lombo (batting left) B/Sc - Grounds out to Short. Mattson to 2B.
    #32 Shore B/F/B/Sc/Ss - Strikes out. Mattson to 3B.
    #12 Martin B/B/F/F - HBP
#23 Reed (batting left) F/F/Sc - Strikes out

#66 Larson B/Sc - Grounds out to Short
    #44 Sternagel B/F/F/B/Sc - Strikes out
#29 Fahrman - Singles to shallow left
#33 Mattson - Singles to right gap

#66 Larson Sc/Sc - Singles to left gap. Martin to 3B.
#44 Sternagel B - Lines out to Short and throw to 1B for DP. Beautiful job by Turgeon.

#13 Kirby Snead comes in to pitch for Blue. Freshman lefty from Alachua.

#29 Fahrman - Grounds out to Short. Bobbled by Turgeon but recovered in time.
    #33 Mattson B/Ss/Ss/Ss - Strikes out
#38 Lombo Sc - Strikes out on foul ball, throw to 1B

#2 Turgeon B - Doubles to right/center wall. Tobias in. Turgeon to 3B on throw home.
    #8 Bader B/B/F/F/Ss - Strikes out

Pitching note - both Freshmen Rubio and Snead dropped some beautiful curve balls in for called strikes. Best I've seen from any Freshmen. Nice job.

    That's it!
