Read somewhere about certain foods, red meat in particular, that are more efficiently digested and metabolized while awake, active and upright. It's probably not idea to eat a big burger or steak minutes before you hit the sack. If you're getting super hungry right before bed time, you may have undernourished yourself.

My son has developed a bad habit of eating only one or two meals during the day and then going to bed, only to wake up in the middle of the night and binge on starchy/salty or sweet foods, even leaving the house to walk to the 7-11 a half mile from our house. We'll find him with bags of chips and empty soda bottles by his bed in the morning. He's not gaining weight, but it can't be good.

Taking him to a dermatologist next week.

Living walking distance to a 7-11 is never a good thing. I used to do the same thing when I lived in DC. Eat well all day then get late night cravings that were easily filled.
