Slippery Slope: Modern usage includes a logically valid form, in which a minor action causes a significant impact through a long chain of logical relationships. (wiki)

So we have Marriage. Eternally described as between a man and a woman.
We now have removed that requirement, a seemingly minor action (see above)
We may very well see polygamy laws challenged. (Chain reaction)
Possibly leading to 1st cousins who want to marry (significant impact)

Note I said: that is not the agenda of Gays, (nor is it their problem).

I just feel that the slip has begun.

I don't however see how that leads us to pedophilia.

Had we not invented marriage, gays would not be able to challenge its definition. Therefore, marriage is the first step on the slippery slope you're describing.

Except...and you already know this...some of us do not believe marriage is a man made institution.
We believe it to be divinely ordained, and by "we" I mean every major religion on the planet.

But lets just run with your idea for a minute.

Did the invent of the car create the slippery slope to the DUI epidemic or did alcohol?
Answer: Neither. It is the combining of the two that created the slippery slope.

Did marriage or homosexuality create THIS slippery slope that we are discussing?
Answer: Neither. It is the combining of the two that created the slippery slope.

In both cases, the two things, if kept separate would not slide further down a slope together.

I don't get your analogy. What's the next step down the DUI slope? Where exactly do you see this combination of drinking and driving ultimately leading to?

    Alcohol + driving = DUI

There's no where else to go with that. Whereas the first step to the depravity brought about by marriage is marriage.

Marriage -> gays challenging marriage definition -> polygamy -> 1st cousins marrying -> marrying your dog

Do away with marriage and you do away with the slope. People can still have children, pair bond, enjoy sex etc., there's no need for marriage, all it does is start us down the slippery slope to marrying our pets.

The reasons for opposing gay marriage are remarkably similar to those opposing interracial marriage.

Right....if you ignore the entire issue of marriage being a vehicle for procreation, they're basically identical.

I thought marriage was a vehicle for combining the resources of two separate families. You know one side has power, the other side has money. Or one side has beauty, the other side has money. Or one side has money, the other side has money. You know, so that the married couple ends up being greater than its separate parts.

At least we can both agree that by itself, two people being in love isn't a reason for marriage at all.

I thought it was common knowledge that money really is the only reason to marry...o_O

In all seriousness, I think the institution of marriage in this country has bigger threats than same sex marriage. The insane rate of divorce tops that list.

Precisely. A racist's understanding of fertility in the 1880's is pretty much on the same level as saying that two men or two women (without artificial insemination or other significant scientific help) cannot physically make a baby. Now, if you've got evidence that two sperm or two eggs can come together to make a zygote I'd be very interested.

first you said the argument wasn't the same. now that you see it sometimes was the same, your answer is 'Yeah, well the opponent xxxxx marriage was just ignorant."

Fair enough. I'd argue that it was pretty well documented by the 1880's that blacks and whites could, in fact, have children, and that the justice(s) involved in that decision likely had some clue that there was no scientific backing for their claim.

So are you saying that because people in the past argued against interracial marriage using the obviously false claim that different races could not procreate, saying that same sex couples cannot procreate today is similarly disingenuous?

Except there is no biblical basis for the racial belief, and there is a biblical basis for gay marriage. I mean, there is that.

Christians have certainly argued there is as well as a biblical basis for segregation.

Right, but there was no such teaching in the scriptures.

Now you may disagree with a Christian view on gay marriage, I respect that...and am actually more sympathetic to gay issues (except marriage) than many of my counterparts...but one doesn't have to look far to find a biblical ground to stand on.

As for the racial component, there is basically zero to go on in the scriptures.

It is quite easy to see how the slope continues. In our culture we believe we have a right to anything that will make us happy. If you'd deny someone from having anything that would bring about personal happiness, then you must be a monster who hates people.

So the argument goes like this..."what if an adult and a child are happy together? Would you be the bigot that denies them a happy loving relationship? Well...if you would then you must be a pedophobe! The pedophobes are going to be on the wrong side of history just like the pro-slavery south and the homophobes because all people and all loving relationships are equal."

The parallel argument is way too easy, and it is critique proof because if you disagree with it, then you are an evil bigot.

The fact that the OP hopes she runs for POTUS shows what's wrong with the partisan nature of the public.

I'd prefer the two parties nominate two candidates that would make me think hard about the choice I'm making. Not just hoping that the other side would nominate a hack.
