Other than the title of the article by the Examiner, what makes this a HATE crime? It just sounds like some punk kids beating up a guy who was then run over trying to get away.

And do you honestly expect the national media to write a story on every homicide/murder?

So impish. Did you really not understand that he meant there is no coverage by the national media, like it says in the story?

Well, because four young black kids attacked and beat a middle aged white guy for no apparent reason, not even to rob him, and he ended up dying as a result. Reverse the races and it's definitely a hate crime, right? So?

How would it definitely be a hate crime? Simply because all the attackers are of a different race than the person assailed? That isn't the basis of a hate crime.

Well yeah you're right, and that is the general belief among some of us. But others obviously have a different view, as evidenced by the coverage of the George Zimmerman case. Which is the point of the thread, I think. Why the double standard?

I haven't followed the Zimmerman case because I became jaded with the early misrepresentations by the media but I wasn't aware they were charging Zimmerman for a hate crime. Even if they are, didn't he make some categorical remarks on the 911 call that could provide some impetus for the belief it was a hate crime?

In the current situation I only see facts supporting four young black males attacking a white man. If the article had cited witnesses alleging the boys were calling him a cracker or something along those lines I could understand the title of the article

The only time the media shows up in ghettos these days is if someone dies.

I am pretty sure Zimmerman was not charged with a hate crime.

In this case, agree with you that absent any specific racial comments, this is probably just four thugs being thugs.

Just out of curiosity if four white teenagers beat up an older black man for no apparent reason, would you require the making of "specific racial comments" by them before regarding it as a racially-motivated hate crime?

Well let's backup, because the thread title says "mainstream," not national.

And then let's also talk about how there are thousands of murders a day that don't hit the national media.

And then we can go back to playing the victim.

Typically, yes, you do have to somehow discern racial motivation to charge someone with a racially motivated crime. The problem is some people see "black on white" or "white on black" as inherently racially motivated.

    Sure.

Four teenagers beating up anybody who looks like an easy victim, is not all that terribly unusual.

If they beat up an old white guy one week and an old black guy the next week, is it a hate crime when they beat up the old black guy, or just more of the same jack-assery?

Your impression is from a selectively edited NBC audio that gave that impression:

Unfortunately for Zimmerman, they left out a lot of conversation between the two sentences. The actual 911 call went like this:

Zimmerman is actually suing NBC for defamation.

Really, there are thousands of murders a day? Wow okay, let's talk about that. Do tell.

Your "playing the victim" line is pathetic in its own right and all the more so because you stole it from rivergator. Considering the nature of this forum - ostensibly "discussion" (but really just argument) about political and topical issues - the vast majority of posts here could be labeled as "playing the victim," since the comments are usually either critical observations about people or events, or critical observations about other people's critical observations.

Damn near everybody here's got an axe to grind about something. This is not The Pub. This is the alley out behind The Pub where differences of opinion are settled.

Well okay, pretty much virtually never "settled", but fought over.
