Apparently, she has a faulty BRCA1 gene. She knew her family history of breast cancer, got tested for the presence of the faulty gene and decided to be pro-active and had surgery. Compelling story.

Just finished reading her account of this myself. Bold decision though with the odds for cancer going from high 80s to less than 5 it was clearly the right one. My mom and one aunt are breast cancer survivors. My other aunt (they are twins) chose the same route as Angelina.

Must have been tough on your mom and her sisters and the rest of the family.

It depends. Some women have a really hard time with mastectomies and then others seem to handle it in stride. I'm sure in Jolie's case she'll get top-of-the-line implants and nobody will ever know the difference.

Yeah it was but we did get good news on my sisters and cousins as it seems they don't have the gene which causes the higher risk.
