    Sympathy is really the secondary issue here, isn't it? Palestinian lives are being lost because of Hamas. Is that not a set back?

    To their politcal cause? Probably not, especially since many people are persuaded that the Israelis are the aggressors, the foremost of those being the Palestinians themselves.

    The protective edge must stretch as far back as the effective range of the rockets Hamas is firing. They don't move rockets to the border and launch them.

    It's not carpet bombing. The IDF advertises where it is going to conduct a kinetic strike unless they actually see a rocket on a rail, it that case it's an obvious self defense issue. These are precision munitions being dropped on specific targets.
