In the second half, UF had only one turnover, no punts and no failed 4th down conversions.......but only had 3 points.

I don't think I've ever seen a half like that before.

First drive: 12 plays, 7:21 TOP, ends in an interception
Second drive: 15 plays, 7:38 TOP, ends in FG
Third (and final) drive: 6 plays, 4:14 TOP, clock runs out

Wow. As frustrating as it is for our own fans, imagine how frustrating it was for the UK fans. UF essentially played keep-away from the Cats in the 2nd half.

Good illustration. Only three drives. This is one of those cases in which TOP is an (not THE) indicator of a dominant performance.

Kickoff started promptly at 7:00 pm. When the game ended I looked at my watch and it was 9:51 pm. This was on top of the horrendous amounts of commercials shown by ESPNU (a 3rd rate network).

Fastest game in history IMO. Swift, efficient, and precise domination and disposal of Kentucky. Got the job done, came home with no injuries. I give a big kudos to Muschamp and staff.

Great point. It is one thing to play "loose defense" when you have a lead and end up "giving it up". It is another thing altogether to use ball control offense and time of possession to burn the soul out of the opponent and win the game. Do not care if the winning score was 24-7 or 41-7.

Tend to agree here...we will see how this holds up against L$U and the Mutts...as we would need our O to match point for point with their O...

Yes, our D is better than theirs...BUT...you cannot have the D out there that long with out scoring some points...

UK fans felt likd they died yesterday-

    46 total plays on offense
    Barely 20 minutes of TOP

The were put in a slow motion meat grinder.

Our D should be fresh for the Pigs...

Being one of the biggest opponents of TOP as a useful stat, I feel like I should reply that i agree with your premise of being a decent indicator here. I think a much better indicator is probably yards (144-50 in second half), but I think TOP can be used as an indicator of success. However, I am totally against people using TOP as a mechanism for success (e.g. if we hold the ball longer we are more likely to win).

Yeah, it seems like TOP comes up somewhat short in the "I am going to kick your azz" department. Not enough dangerousness and killer-finish in it.

It's a little like, "it's mine, and you can't have it," kinda thing.

Yep, its all about context ... If we have a lead and hold the ball longer via pounding the ball then we are very, very likely to win.

Exactly. Since the only way to win is to out-score the other side, so when you have a 7.5 minute drive that ends in a turnover, like we did, you end up with the same outcome as if you had just turned it over after having it for 30 seconds.

TOP was an indicator of success in yesterday's game. Nobody is claiming here that it is a consistent mechanism for success. This debate is played out, though there really is no debate.

Except if you have it for 7.5 minutes that's a lot of time that the opposition does not have to score. They can't score if they don't have the ball (mostly).

The issue that arises with this strategy is if you play keep away for 15 minutes and only come up with 3 pts, the other team is likely within striking distance in the 2nd half with one mistake. For example, Kentucky would have been right in the game in the 2nd half with us had Tyler Murphy not made that tackle on what looked like a potential pick 6. Then the players start playing tight as the possibility of an upset becomes a reality.

Well whoopie, if we don't either.

I like football the most when my team wins and are fun to watch. Watching UF regularly score 50 points was great. Watching my team run the clock in the third quarter is a snoozefest. I don't think I watched most of the second half last night. I still love the Gators, but I've never sleepwalked through a game before.
