The city of Chicago was raised by over a foot during the 1850s and ’60s without disrupting daily life.

It the middle of the 19th century, Chicago was going through the problem of water not being able to flow out of the city. The streets were filled with mud. When the entire city started to look like a swamp, a solution was developed. The solution was to raise the entire city by a few feet!

This particular solution was devised by the Chicago Board of Sewerage Commissioners. Over the next 20 years, the city gradually grew taller. New foundations were laid underneath existing buildings and the streets were filled with dirt to elevate them. All this work had no effect on normal life in the city. An entire half block of a street was lifted in an amazing engineering feat. The engineer behind this was George Pullman who went on to become famous for his train Pullman sleeping car. In some cases, entire buildings were dug out, put on wooden logs, and rolled to new locations.(1,2)

The Tunnel of Love, Klevan, Ukraine
Take your ‘loved one’ (or lover, if we’re not beating around the bush) to the Tunnel of Love and legend has it that ‘ask a sincere desire and it will be fulfilled’. Sounds a bit creepy, especially after dark. This naturally-created tunnel in Klevan, Ukraine is in use three times a day when a train passes through to take wood to a nearby factory. So don’t get too lost in the moment.

    Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
Frozen in the depths of winter, the world’s largest salt flat is transformed in to a giant sky-reflecting mirror during rainy season. The pools left over from this monumental prehistoric lake create a shimmering, illusory horizon, making it one of the best places to visit in the world if you like a good trick shot or fun selfie!

According to the United Nations estimates, the world’s population between 1960 and 1965 was over three billion. The world population reached seven billion on October 31, 2011, and as of December 2017 is 7.6 billion. It took more than 70,000 years for the population to rise from less than 0.015 million in 70,000 BCE to one billion in early 1800s CE. In around 100 years, the population doubled and grew to 2.5 billion in the 1950s. In just 50 years, the population was 6.1 billion and is estimated to reach 8 billion by 2025.(source)

Urban Explorer Finds The Sad Remains Of The Soviet Space Shuttle Program
The Buran prototype shuttles found by Mirebs, however, are from an earlier era – they are the last remnants of a space program that began in 1974 and was finally shuttered in 1993. The only operational Buran shuttle, Orbiter 1K1, completed one unmanned orbital flight before it was grounded. Unfortunately, this shuttle was destroyed in a hangar collapse in 2002.
