Or might make one side of the discussion stop using emotionally loaded phrases like "death panels". Because you know that a major portion of medicare is end of life situations. Or have other doctors review grandma's potentail hip replacement surgery and decide that at 82 her bones are too fragile to have it. Or the unnecessary stents. Or the unnecessary prostate surgery at 85. We will have to make tough decisions based on probability of success and quality of life afterwards rather than, Medicare will pay for it, let's try it anyway.

Heroin is still expensive, too. Good grief.

I agree that medical costs need to be cut.

Actually, in reference to above paragraph as for as doctor's compensation goes, it is the income disparity between regular doctors and some specialists that needs to be addressed.

The free market would solve this problem...

Investing in America's future is not comparable, metaphorically speaking, to buying heroin.

So your answer to the addiction metaphor for borrowing *against* the country's future the way a junkie borrows against their health is basically "... nuh uh"?

Here's what Larry Summers has to say about debt, investment, and growth:

Not surprised you would believe that bull mierda chompy- until we figure out how to cut spending we will continue down the road to fiscal collapse- I fin it very difficult to understand how or why you libs cannot seem to fathom that spending more than you take in is impossible to sustain

Ahhh, the Dems controlled the House and Senate for two years before the recession. They own it. Actually you can go back to Clinton who expanded Carter's Community Reinvestment Act giving birth to the Subprime market. Bush & McCain warned the Housing Finance Committee (Controlled by the Dems) and were ignored (Thank you Barney Frank).

FWIW, I have it on good authority that Barney is a Pitcher, not a Catcher.

I don't mean this in besmirching way, Bill, because I like you as a person, but whenever I read your posts I think of the word hopeless

I love how the OP, a self described progressive, starts another thread about how an OP-Ed page nails the Tea party.

Not liberal, moderate progressive. But, regardless, once again, you're dead wrong. My economic philosophy (moderate progressives) is not hopeless.

Anything progressive means you are closer to socialism than to a representative republic- you do not believe in fiscal responsibility and your bleeding heart says redistribution of wealth is a nobel. Practice

So tell me mr moderate progressive do you think we need to drastically cut spending and balance our budget? Do you favor a much higher tax bracket for those who make a lot of money and if so why? And do you think it is okay that 47% of our income tax paying citizens do not contribute to our tax rolls?

And can you please explain how we pay for the trillion dollars we overspend each year and have to borrow to do so and that is before we find out what the ACA is going to cosr

If we spurred growth slightly the budget deficit would easily be eliminated. It would take an increase of just .2 percent according to the CBO.

As far as taxes go, I would broaden the base.
