D, I tried sending you a PM but received a notice your mailbox is full and you are unable to receive new messages. Reading through the obituaries in Sunday's G'ville Sun I read of the passing of someone I'm pretty certain was your mother?

I was saddened for you and know a little of what you are going through as my dad was also an Alzheimer's victim. He was diagnosed at age 72 in 1979 and passed in 1985. It was wrenching.

But as difficult as it was, and as much as we loved him, with his passing there was also a sense of relief for all of us as his mind had been lost for several years prior to his death. This was most especially felt by my own mother as she cared for him at home until the last 14 months of his life.

The notice said your mother was an ardent Gator fan, freely offering coaching advice to the TV. That made me chuckle. She was apparently a remarkable woman and I'm sure you have many wonderful memories to sustain you.

I hope your mother's passing was easy and stress free. Rest in the comfort of your resilient faith and the knowledge her spirit has returned to God. I know your faith is strong and the Lord will bear you through your time of sorrow.

    Blessings,
    Judy

Prayers and condolences to Dream and his family too. Losing your mother is the hardest moment in time for anyone to bare.

Hope you're okay, Dream, we miss you here.

... was wondering where he's been...

Sorry to hear that Dream. My grandfather had Alzheimers and my mom cared for he and my grandmother full time for the last 5 years so of their lives so I know how difficult that can be. I was 9 when he passed but I vividly remember those few years.

You and your family have my prayers.

Really sorry to hear about this. I too had to watch as my dad suffered through Alzheimer's and his subsequent passing and it is not an easy thing to have to do.

Condolences to Dream and his family.

    SHIRLEY DYKES HARRIS
    Obituary or Funeral Notice

    HARRIS, SHIRLEY DYKES

Shirley Dykes (Harris) passed away peacefully at Community Hospice in Jacksonville after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. She was our Mom, our cheerleader and the baker of spectacular desserts. She loved the Gators, spoiled her cats and fed the many birds who took up residence in her backyard. She loved puzzles-the harder the better-- and lived for the visits from her grandchildren.

After attending the University of Florida she worked there for nearly 30 years at the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Respected by her bosses, colleagues and students alike she received and proudly displayed the many accolades given to her. And despite the awards, she was most proud of being a surrogate mom to the many bewildered and homesick students she encountered at McCarty Hall. She was an ardent Gator fan and was never shy about offering coaching advice to the TV during particularly close games. She even joined in the impromptu victory parades down University Avenue well into her 80's.

She is survived by four children: Dale Dykes, Debbie Dykes, Donna Quintard and Dana Dykes. Nine grandchildren: Kyler Dykes, Lauren Wasloski, Krista Wasloski, Cory Quintard, Halle Quintard, Monica Dykes, Kara Dykes, Dylan Dykes, Alyssa Dykes and one great-grandchild: Kylee Perez. We know she was greeted with open arms by our father Bernard Dykes (who she described as the love of her life), her parents Roy and Doris Turner and our beloved brother Duane Dykes. We also suspect that she was joined by several sweet, but demanding cats.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 11:00am in the Baughman Center on the University of Florida Campus.

Arrangements are under the care of Forest Meadows Funeral Homes and Cemeteries, 725 NW 23rd Ave., Gainesville, FL 32609 (352) 378-2528. Please sign her guestbook at www.forestmeadowsfh.com

    Dear Judy,

I hope I posted the correct obit above and if not please let me know so I can quickly delete.

I only posted this based on your comments. I do not know either of them and you didn't sound like you were sure. You said "pretty certain."

Dream, I lost my dad to Alzheimer's after a long struggle with the disease. May you always remember your mom for the good times and the love she brought to her family. One day there will be a great reunion with our Lord and all those dear ones we miss so much. Until then rest in the knowledge that your mom is in the arms of the Savior.

Jag, that is the correct notice. I did open the original post with a question of a sort, but the name of one of the survivors listed exactly matches Dream's name. It's not a common name, but that, along with the Gainesville and UF connections has me almost certain it is his mother but cannot know for an absolute certainty until he confirms.

    Thanks Lacuna.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Dream and his family.

My Mother passed away about 8 years ago and I think about her all the time. It isn't easy when you lose a parent.
