Dad passed away a just over a year ago. My Mom, now 86, lives alone. Scares me just a little whenever she calls but she rarely calls at night. Phone rings and she's crying. Says someone shot through her door! I ask if she's shot and she says no, just a bit shaken. Says she was sitting in her chair when she heard a loud noise. Cat jumped up. I asked if she'd called 911 and she said no. I told her I was on my way and asked her to call the police. I'm there in about 12 minutes, my brother is there when I get there, 3 cops are investigating the bullet hole. Police measure a downward angle from a 1" diameter hole in the front door 4' to another hole in a kinda glass/ceramic vase and then a 90 degree ricochet 10' to the chair my Mom was sitting in. Mom found the bullet (a single large shotgun slug) resting in her chair. Magic loogey! It was amazing. Police say they're pretty sure they know where the shot came from. They tell my Mom that an incident is being investigated maybe 8 to 10 blocks away, that no one actually targeted her or her house and that what goes up must come down. Brother and I made a few jokes and said goodnight.

Sorry all, no point, just venting/sharing. All the best.

Thanks all. Mom's very much alright. Yes, she was scared (who wouldn't be) but she seemed fine when we left. I'm lucky; my Mom is not only here, she's both (fairly) healthy and very happy. None of that cantankerous old woman in my Mom. She'll enjoy telling this story for a couple of weeks. Hell, before my brother and I left last night, someone walked by and said, "what happened", Mom replied, "I got shot", then corrected herself and said, "someone shot my house". I sometimes get frustrated with my Mom but I'm sometimes a fool too. Mom's alright and I'm a lucky dude.

Went by this A.M. She's fine, all. Thanks. Said it was scary and it shook her but the fact that it was a random thing made it palatable.

Tough to see the parents go through that terror. Sounds like the police did some pretty good detective work. Pray that it all is well, and worked out.

what goes up must come down is a concept lost on too many idiots that shoot guns off into the air thinking it is harmless. can't imagine shooting a slug off just to make noise though, especially at an upward angle, that would leave a mark with my 12 guage

Part that surprised me was the ricochet. That bullet (slug) traveled 8 blocks, went through a door, hit a vase and then hit a pebble inside the vase, changed direction 90 degrees and flew across the room 10' before hitting the cushion in my Mom's chair. Absolutely Seinfeldien!
