In most states, mere presence at the scene of a crime - without more - is insufficient evidence of any criminal offense.

To be criminally culpable under a "principal" theory - and being equally guilty as the perpetrator (actor) - one present at the scene of a crime must participate in the act by aiding, abetting, encouraging, and / or otherwise assisting the perpetrator to commit the act, and the act committed by the perpetrator must be the actual act that the principal wanted to be committed.

You don't have to be present at the scene of the crime, to be convicted as a principal, and to be as equally guilty as the perpetrator. (e.g., the Godfather ordering a hit on somebody, and the hitman carrying out the order).
