A ride around Le Mans in 1956

Mike Hawthorne takes us for a ride around the Circuit de la Sarthe a few days before the race, a British broadcaster put cameras on Hawthorne's car (A Jaguar D-Type), hung a mic around his neck and had him narrate a lap of the famous LeMans circuit.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 13, 2013) – Growing up, Father's Day and the 24 Hours of Le Mans" were synonymous for young Ricky and Jordan Taylor. That meant dad – accomplished sports car driver Wayne Taylor – was in France competing in a race traditionally held on Father's Day weekend.

Since the race meant so much to their father, both brothers decided very early that someday they would follow in his footsteps and drive at Le Mans.

Taylor took his sons to the endurance classic for the first time in 2001, when Ricky was 11 and Jordan 10.

"That was the first time we really celebrated a proper Father's Day," Ricky recalled.

This year, the roles are reversed. Ricky, 23, is set to race at Circuit de la Sarthe for the first time, while Jordan, 22, returns for a second year with Corvette Racing. Jordan will co-drive the No. 73 Corvette C6 ZR1 with Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia in the LM GTE Pro class. Ricky will co-drive the No. 50 Corvette C6 ZR1 with Patrick Bornhauser and Julien Canal for Larbre Competition in the LM GTE Am class. The Taylors are among 33 drivers from the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón and GRAND-AM Road Racing who will compete in the 90th anniversary running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Richard Westbrook and the Taylor brothers are riding from Mid-Ohio to Chicago to fly to Le Mans. Jordan provides updates on the pit stop and driver change, and a Mullet adjustment.

Given the treacherous conditions it was no surprise that the first safety car was out just ten minutes into the race. The cause was the #95 Aston Martin Vantage V8 GTE-Am front runner, after Allan Simonsen spun off at Tertre Rouge. He took a hard hit against the barrier, demolishing the car and forcing full safety extraction and medical response teams to scramble. Simonsen was reported to be awake and talking with medics, but was transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

Reports are out that Allan Simonsen has died from his injuries.

    http://www.nationalspeedsportnews.com/more/allan-simonsen-killed-during-le-mans-24/

Simonsen is a former Danish Formula Ford champion and was considered to be one of the most versatile GT drivers in the world.

The fatality is the first driver death at Le Mans since 1997 when Sebastien Enjolras was killed in a pre-qualifying accident. The last driver killed during the 24-hour race was Jo Gartner in 1986.

Aston Martin Racing plans to continue racing during the 90th 24 Hours of Le Mans in tribute to Simonsen at the specific request of his family.
