Looking at the grandstands at Bristol today and it appears 50% of capacity is a generous estimate, particularly when looking at the back stretch over Payton Manning's shoulder.

If they can't get closer to a full crowd at what is possibly the best, most exciting race of the year--other than the night race at Bristol--then they are seriously looking at major problems.

Putting a UT game inside the Bristol facility, which will draw a capacity 165,000 gate, may be the only way Bruton Smith covers his debt payment this year.

I have never understood the fascination with auto racing.

I am THAT GUY. The guy who when he watches auto racing is hoping to see the nastiest car wreck in the history of mankind. That's me.

Watching cars go around and around in a circle doesn't do much for me.

I was actually thinking the same thing and did some research today when I saw it.
Team values have declined substantially in the last few years, which is why they consolidated this year. But they probably need even more consolidation.
I think the sport faced the perfect storm over the last 7 or 8 years. The Great Recession hit their fans harder than most sports, the leadership cleaning up the sport took away the reasons many people watched and made it feel more corporate, and it has lost a lot of its big names/rivalries that helped make it colorful - Gordon, Stewart (not gone yet but nothing like he was), E moving to Hendrick took away the us vs them, and add to all of that there's a reason it wasn't crazy popular before the fox contract in 2001, many who gave it a try have moved on and the core audience is left.
Even the nascar HOF in Charlotte is faced with getting debt relief or going under.

I've watched NASCAR longer, but I'm a Formula 1 fan. It's more driving (well, actually qualifying is most important these days ... at least for the Mercedes team). However, NASCAR drivers have a set the size of grapefruit with the drafting, etc. Both are fun to watch, but I've never attended races for either one. I just can't imagine sitting in one place and watching the cars go past and TV appears the best way to watch.

In the end, NASCAR, like baseball and golf, doesn't offer generally enough excitement throughout the event. Even in F1 racing, which has zigs and zags, it gets boring to see not much happening except for the cars circling the track in order (maybe both F1 and NASCAR will require crashes every 5 laps or so). As for baseball and its 2 1/2-3 hour games, it's been on a decline from what I've experienced and, as for golf, unless a new Tiger emerges, no one much cares unless it's a major ... and even one of those four has fallen in popularity.

Also, football isn't immune. NFL stadiums aren't getting bigger as popularity grows ... they're getting smaller. GC has had a number of postings about the effect of HD TV on the game-watching experience.

Should move to hydrogen cell or electric cars. It would make it cutting edge technology, help save the planet and be more exciting. I would watch it then.

While most hard core fans don't care, I am Sure watching people burn off thousands of gallons of fuel every weekend for sport turns a lot of younger people off.
If they would do it based on alternative energy and give teams a wide berth to create their own engines it would cost a ton more money, but it would make the strategy and technology fascinating. Probably raise a lot of interest too and maybe even lead to some breakthroughs for society.
