Tragedy averted at UCF
Pretty scary stuff for students and their parents:
Quote:
A former University of Central Florida student found dead in his dorm room of an apparent suicide, alongside weapons and a backpack of bombs, planned a larger attack, officials said Monday.
School spokesman Grant Heston identified the student as 30-year-old James Oliver Seevakumaran.
He was at the university from fall 2010 through fall 2012 but was not enrolled for the spring semester and was in the process of being removed from the dorm room where he lived.
"While the crime scene processing was under way in that room, we found some notes and some writings that indicated that this was a planned attack," UCF Police Chief Richard Beary told reporters.
When police entered the dorm room, they found Seevakumaran, dead from an apparent self-inflicted single gunshot wound to the head, a handgun, an assault weapon, a couple hundred rounds of ammunition, and four improvised explosive devices in a backpack.

Sorry to hear about the loss of life. I am grateful for the fact that he went out solo and didn't take a number of other souls with him. I'm no proponent of suicide; but, in a peverse sense, I wish this guy would get the notoriety for NOT injuring others.
A person I work with has had two siblings commit suicide and does fundraising to help find help for those considering suicide. She mentioned that a handful of folks at work have approached her since she communicated about her volunteer efforts about how they've been affected personally either by friends or family committing suicide. Sad, sad, sad - I pray folks ...even someone reading this...would know that there are people who do care and are willing to love them to health.

From the article I read and the news report I saw the so called "assault weapon" was a 22 rifle. Not that it could not kill people, but would not be anything the military would use. So if we should outlaw assault weapons what are we going to do about the improvised explosive devices? Maybe we should outlaw those then he would not have had them. The handgun in this case seems to be a good thing as it kept him from using the 22 caliber assault weapon.

Actually, what stopped this guy was a person with a phone.

Who was that?

It all started around 12:20 a.m., when a fire alarm went off at the Tower 1 dormitory. Beary told CNN that Seevakumaran pulled the fire alarm, perhaps to draw many people out into the open.
Police believe that Seevakumaran then went to his room to pick up the weapons.
There, he encountered one of his roommates, who told police that Seevakumaran pointed a weapon at him. The roommate ran into a bathroom and called 911.
Officers arrived within minutes to rescue the roommate. They found Seevakumaran's body in his bedroom.
