I rarely...as in damn near NEVER...watch SNL anymore and haven't for years, did happen by chance to stumble onto it last night and saw what brought me back to the good old days of SNL when there was some real talent on the show. Some big names who hosted the show over the years or starred on it, and in a couple of cases were in the founding crew--were in the opening bit last night. Seeing some of the older ones was nice.
Probably will be the last time I watch SNL for another 10-15 years though...lol.
Hmmm...for some reason the video doesn't seem to show or work after I posted it, yet it worked on my preview. Oh well--if someone can tell me how to fix, thanks.
In the meantime, here is the link. Worth watching if you were a SNL fan going back to the beginning days.

I saw it. Really enjoyed it, but I enjoy it almost every time I see it. Recent cast members and writers have been quite good. The jury is still out on the brand new ones, but so far, so good.
IMHO, Seth Myers is the best Weekend Update anchor ever. His frequent guest "Stephon" is hilarious. Last night was one of his best performances, especially his impression of Donald Duck having a Vietnam nightmare. My wife, daughter and I were practically rolling on the floor.
Been watching since '75. There have been low points, but this isn't one of them.

I too started watching the very first time it aired back in Oct 75 and still feel the original cast was the best--possibly because tv had not ever had a show of that type before and the novelty made it that much more special. I remember the week prior to the very first show, the entire cast was on Tom Snyder's show "Tomorrow" promoting this 'new and different show' that NBC was going to launch the following week. The hype of it had our attention so much that we HAD to watch the first show just to see what it was all about.
Hard to believe that Chevy Chase was only there for one full season and left midway through the second year! He seemed like such a staple and "seemed" to be there for several years--just goes to show the full impact of the show and the first cast. None of us will ever forget his famous lines--"Jane, you ignorant slut" and in the presidential debate parody--"I was told there would be no math". Belushi and his Samurai characters....the "cheeburger, cheeburger, cheep, cheep, Pepsi" deli scenes....the lists go on and on, yet those folks were not there for an extended time. That really emphasizes just how profound and influential that show was.
You are right about having ups and downs over the course of the show, and I agree--last night was a great one. There has been some amazing talent come and go over the years with some of the cast members being just so-so, while others have been extraordinary. Maybe I won't wait for years to watch again....lol....just don't think it would ever be a staple in my tv lineup like it used to be---I got spoiled back in the early days and the Bill Murray era, Eddie Murphy, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, etc periods. IMO, no group since or yet to come will match up with the original though--the "Not ready for prime time players".
Probably my three favorites from the Five-Timers Club weren't even in that skit: John Goodman, Bill Murray, and Christopher Walken.

I actually watch SNL regularly. I don't think the show itself is that funny, but all of the recent Cast members have been hilarious. Does that make sense?
