I've got a friend who was offered a haven here in the states, his uncle used to work for this guy, and ratted him out on a lot of things... However he still has some friends on the "inside" and we'll 1) nothing will change and 2) he might have been dead for some time now, just on machines.

Penn, who has been a longtime supporter of Chavez, made a surprise appearance in Bolivia in December to attend a candlelight vigil for the health of the leader. Said Penn at the vigil: “He’s one of the most important forces we’ve had on this planet, and I’ll wish him nothing but that great strength he has shown over and over again. I do it in love, and I do it in gratitude.
Earlier in August 2012, Penn had joined Chavez at an election rally in Venezuela. The two first met in 2007 in Venezuela.

Stone first met Chavez in December 2007. The filmmaker championed Chavez in his 2009 film South of the Border, which explored the political and social changes occurring in South America, and credited Chavez for many of those changes.

I know it isn't exactly kosher to celebrate anyone's passing...but there are exceptions. He was the sworn enemy of the US in ways most people don't have any clue about (and likely never will).

For a grade-A POS who's country has regressed in almost every way imaginable...good riddance. His legacy will be one of miserable failure when his "revolution" is exposed for what it really was: another Latin American despot cultivating power and riches to loot his country rotten and set real progress back decades. Only difference between him and any number of other pissant Latin American dictators from the 70s and 80s: his choice of favorites.

For people who actually care about seeing Latin America develop and prosper, today's a good day. Chavez has done more to set the continent backwards in recent memory than almost anything you can think of.

That was part of it but not the whole reason. He mettled in all of Latin Americas affairs and essentially wanted to rule the region. Uneducated people have been his prey for decades (see Nicaragua). He was as power hungry as they came and cozied up with out enemies (see Iran).
