As for the A-10, many are stationed at Davis Monthan AFB (where the boneyard and museum are located). I was in school during Desert Swarm and the hogs would be flying all day. And their landing pattern is right over campus, and over the apartment complex I used to live in. They land low and slow, and with a very distinctive whine. The A-10 is the most impressive "ugly" plane, and I've talked to pilots who have said if they had a choice, they wouldn't any other in combat.
I try to visit every time I am in AZ. I love the drive from Phoenix and I always swing by St Mary's on the way out.

During the Vietnam War Jacksonville was a beehive of military activity. I lived near 4 Navy facilities. Mayport, Mainside, Cecil Field, and White House. Of the four facilities my home was located between the last three facilities. The activitu cocnsisted of the follow item: Aircraft Carriers and their escorts were moving in and out of the Mayport Carrier basin. P-3 Orion's were flying training and real missions 24/7 out of NAS Mainside. At White House F-4's, A-6's, and A-7's were executing "Touch and Go's" 24/7. During those years White House recorded more landing's and take offs than and other airport In the world. It was a rare day in my neighborhood when you could look up into the sky and not see or hear a plane or a chopper.
