With a tighter, crisper direction, The Forty Year Old Virgin would be (IMO) one of the best comedies of all time, rather than (IMO) one of the best comedies of the last decade. Apatow gave them way too much reign to improvise, leading to teeth-gratingly bad material -- "It looks like dopplar radar." -- that just serves as filler. Still, after probably 30 viewings, it has enough juice in the tank to make me laugh every time I see it, usually at a different joke each time.
