UNC/Duke's oversized ego and banner hanging...
I will be going to the UNC/FSU game today. I have been to Cameron numerous times.
I do not have a problem with a school hanging a banner if you win the conference and/or tournament championship. Or Final Four/NC.
But have you have noticed, both schools hang them for EVERYTHING. Sweet 16. Elite 8. AND if AP or USA Today votes them #1 at the end of the season. This is ridiculous.
The voting by uniformed voters is biased and meaningless. Hell, Ohio State could hang one in 2007.
The fact remains that when this season is over, UF will possess a better resume than either school over the past 15 years.
But asking the uniformed basketball fan, THAT CAN'T BE TRUE.
It is.

i have no problem w/ any sort of banners. they're free to do whatever they want. i'm surprised that those programs would put up banners for anything, though. bet it gets cluttered. and i'd think it would have the opposite effect to feeding their ego: sets themselves up to be mocked a bit when you 'bannerize' every little achievement.

Haven't been to the O'Connell center in 30 years. Do we hang banners for Conference/tournament championships?

UNC also counts "helms titles" as national championships.
Although, even more startlingly, they also count titles won where players attended fake classes.

the final four banners are hung in the odome. there are other banners on the perimeter walls for other achievements. most are composite banners though that list the years and they do it for all the sports that use the facility, such as indoor track, women's hoops, volleyball, etc.

UNC actually retired Tyler Zeller's # a few weeks ago if that tells you anything about what their standards for achievement are.

I've been to the Dean Dome. Its ridiculous. This image doesnt show many of them that are on the side from which the photo was taken.

I love how the triple up on banners: Here they have a banner that says 2005 NCAA Champs. Than right in front of it...in case the Title banner wasnt a clue....thay have a banner that tells the ranking. THEN they have a big national title banner in another spot. 1 title = 3 banners.

when it comes to the merits of both programs. They are beyond repute.
They can pretty much do what they want for the next 25 years....
then like Notre Dame and football, they have to start earning it again!

Pretty sure we have an NIT Banner listing all of the years we played in the NIT Tournament. Same for just regular NCAA appearances. If it were up to me I would just have banners for Natty's, FF appearances, and conference titles.

NIT 3rd Place, 1973. 
The NIT was already known as the "Not Important Tournament" by then. UCLA won the NIT in 1985 and doesn't hang a banner for it.
It makes UNC look stupid to hang that banner, but it's their choice.
