Can we now put something to rest?
The poor logic that foul/free throw discrepancy are proof of poor officiating.
I watched the game. I imagine most of you did too. I didn't notice a favorable whistle one way or another. Did you? I thought the game was fairly called and that the refs played no part in the outcome. Agreed?

So how about we make a deal and just come to an agreement that FT and foul discrepancy don't always tell the whole story. Pardon my smartass tone, but this has always been something that's gotten on my nerves and is something I see propagated, not just on this site, but on everyone that has ever existed.
Great game though. Talk about locking down a team in crunch time...

I agree it doesn't always tell the whole story but it does sometimes. Much of it has to do with a teams philosophy and how much they drive to the basket/get the ball inside.

To be fair, we got every call today
I Only say that because many of us like to bitch when we feel like we've gotten hosed by the refs.
If anyone got hosed today, it was Bama. There was a stretch in the second half where they couldn't breathe without getting a whistle.
That being said, I'll take it

I thought it was pretty even throughout. There were several missed/bad calls on both sides. Maybe we got 1 or 2 more, but we are were at home. I don't think BAMA fans are blaming the refs for this.

I'd say it was more than 1 or 2.

Which ones?
I remember seeing Murphy get held a bunch of times and no foul call. There was no foul on the and-1 for Releford.

Alabama is a fouling team. That's been their nature all season because they're not that good offensively.

Actually, Bama fouled a ton and could have been called for more. The refs missed a couple here or there but they called a good game for the most part.

It was fair on both ends. I felt that everything pretty much evened out.

I think we got some home cooking. Thst big of a foul disparity is rarely justified.

I don't think it always tells the whole story; however, I think it has alot to do with the "timing" of calls that are made that seem to ultimately affect the outcome.
Close games and rivalry games always seem to stand out more with officiating because it seems that maybe 1 or 2 calls down the "stretch" (that could really either go one way or the other) end up having some effect on the game.
Also when refs seem to get either "overly expressive" or influenced by yelling fans, it also seems to stand out more (ex: the charging call towards the end of the game at Tennessee when the UF player hadn't even made contact with the UT player).
Not the whole story, but a part it.

over the course of most games and for the season it evens out, home team gets the benefit of the doubt in most tilts in most sports......... glad to finish the way we did today, play another solid game against Vandy for senior night then go tame the Cats at Rupp to cap a good season

Show me a rule book or officials training guide where it says "homecooking." Refs come in all sizes and colors. Vast majority do their job to the best of their ability(Al Ford & the swamp-swindle crew, notwithstanding). Calling basketball is a tough, thankless job. They can't see everything and can't call everything they see(if no harm or advantage) or the game would never end. Some refs just have more ability than others.
Very rarely is there a gambler/cheater, but it does happen.
My hope is that they just call the game the same on both ends of the floor, given they don't see everything as they ARE human.

And the poor logic that foul/free throw discrepancy are never proof of poor officiating.

It's not so much about being awarded free throws as it is about MAKING them.

I think this is all most fans want to see but Refs being human I think that leads to what some folks would call home cooking, rarely is it so bad that one should take it as evidence of a Refs personal preference......... and remember it is never Homecooking at the O'Dome or in the Swamp

Well said. I used to coach high school basketball and swore that any fool could officiate it. I've been an official for the past 3 years and I can tell you that almost nothing is as black and white as it seems to fans and coaches. You can't just call everything you see. A lot of it has to be let go. So you basically have to make a split second decision on advantage/disadvantage and you have to keep in mind how your partners are calling similar situations in an effort to be consistent as a crew. It's so much more difficult than I ever would have imagined.
