Default DNC won't re-pay Duke Energy $10M re: convention

Seriously, do these clueless lawyers in DC have any budgeting skills whatsoever? This is laughable.

From the link:

Duke Energy won’t be repaid the $10 million line of credit it guaranteed for Charlotte to host last year’s Democratic National Convention, the company confirmed Thursday.

As the credit line came due, Duke made official what it had signaled to shareholders in an earnings report last November. Because Duke can claim the money as a business expense for tax purposes, shareholders will foot $6 million of the cost.

The DNC host committee struggled to raise money under fundraising rules set by the White House that banned corporate cash contributions. By last October, a month after the convention, it had raised $24.1 million of the original $36.6 million goal.

Duke’s financial support of Charlotte’s biggest event became a political football soon after the credit guarantee was announced in early 2011. Sidewalk protesters from FreedomWorks, a conservative group, waved “Fire Jim Rogers” signs as Duke’s CEO presided over the company’s annual meeting that spring.

Didn't Obama say that they wouldn't accept corporate contributions? Yeah right. But they accepted the corporate bail out after the convention.

A friend who has a commercial printing business in DC area got stung for $500 K in printing bills the DNC did not pay in 2008 until they were threatened with legal action. He got his money 3 years late. They had the balls to ask him to do some of their work in this last cycle and he told them to go blank themselves...only way he would do it was cash up front. He also found out from others in the business who had been approached and knew "his story" and they all demanded cash up front as well.

DNC is like their constituents...accustomed to others paying for their responsibilities.

downeast: unfortunately, as is typically the case, I don't think it's limited to Democrats - every printer I know here in Orlando takes money up front from politicians. Come early November, if you lose what incentive (outside of morality and separately, the law) do you have to pay it back? This case, sadly, is one when the victor still stiffs the provider.

Question is: what does Duke Energy get for their $10 million?
I'm more and more convinced that this is all theater - what follows is totally my imagination - Duke Energy can bemoan this $10 million "loss" then, when Federal inspectors are getting a little to close for comfort they "miraculously" get reassigned....20 years later the consequences of some nasty things Duke Energy is doing today come to light and there is weeping and gnashing of teeth, innocents injured, attorneys getting rich; and, Voila! another election to subsidize! The circle of corruption continues.

As the article states further down, Duke Energy got more in payback for their ten million. They defend forgiving the loan saying that they don't favor either party (i.e. their an equal opportunity briber).

I see a big government backed "green energy" loan for hamsters on little running wheels or some other failure to be coming from 0's administration anytime now.

No good deed like this goes without reward. I'm sure we will be sending them some of the free infinite money shortly!

It's Great to be a Florida Gator!

There is so much that is correct with this post!

The amount of money invested on elections (especially presidential) is way over the top.
The only thing that cones from this process is corruption. You would have to be a total idiot to believe that the donors and bundlers of tens to hundreds of millions of dollars are not expecting anything in return. By the way it does not make any difference if you are a Dem or Rep. Both sides get or are corrupted.

A good friend of mine makes lapel pins and its huge business with both RNC and DNC... His policy is simple. No credit is ever extended to a political party. He got burned once. Now it is cash on the barrel head only.

Note- the same policy is in place for religious organization. Church group did not want to pay and told him he could deduct as a tax deduction and that it was is moral obligation to contribute. He sued/they paid.

I hear you on cash up front from politicians. This printer in DC continues to work for the RNC and has never had a problem. Maybe he has been lucky with the pubs.

Pathetic commentary on what some folks think is God's mandate. I am a church-goer/member; and, in business, what scares me most is when someone brings up religion UP FRONT as a good reason to do business with them..HUGE red flag. Scripture says that "a laborer is worth his wages" and not paying someone what they are due, on time is equivalent to any other violation of the good book.

I too am a God fearing church goer....but I learned a long time ago that if at all possible do not do business with fellow emebers of the church I attend. They (and I) are human and have some serious flaws.

As for politicians....at some point this country will wake up and realize that the two party system is US the citizens and them, Washington D.C. insiders. Of course they want US to pay for everything. Why not. We have so far.
