Default Officiating questions....

After yesterday's win over Bama I had some discussion with Bama friends - some who were of the opinion the refs "gave us" the game.

To be fair......other Bama friends disputed that claim and said they simply lost to a better team, despite whatever calls went against them.

I think you have to factor in last weekend's Bama loss against LSU where they were definitely screwed by the refs - so essentially the were already very sensitive to any officiating "concerns".

During the game thread I mentioned this and the replies were to the effect that it is common that the home team gets the benefit of some of the calls....such as charging vs. blocking.

So without bashing Bama in particular, I would like to hear your opinion of how it works in our conference (or in college bb in general).....does the home team get calls and what has been your perception to this inequity throughout this season?

There's also the moral factor - that when calls repeatedly go against a team it carries over to attitude and that is collateral effects that also will take a team down during a game.

TIA for your comments.

Home court in basketball is very important and not just because of the crowd. IMO 50/50 calls usually go in the favor of the home team. I have no stats to back this up just years of watching bball games. It is somewhat rare that teams are outright robbed by refs it is just a charge/block call gets made for the home team on a 50/50 call or a goal tending call goes the way of the home team or an oob call. Little things that can add up if enough of them occur in a game.

How was UAL definitely screwed by the officials in their loss at LSU? I saw a bit of the end and the various OTs and did not see anything I felt was unusual.

Home teams usually get more calls than the opponent, especially if the crowd is loud and intimidating. I saw a stat where road teams in college basketball have gotten more fouls called on them than the home teams for every season they went back to research (20 years or so) and the disparity was significant. I do think it has an impact on the road team and decreases their energy level. To win on the road in college basketball you need to be appreciably better than the home team.

Well, Coach Grant said the fouls and free throw disparity had more to do with the Gators attacking the rim than anything else.

The SEC games have been pretty consistent this year wrt to homerism. Yesterday's game may have been called in the Gators' favor, but I didn't see obviously poor calls. We got to the line more than usual, because we didn't hoist many threes (only 13 attempts) and went to the basket much more than usual. We earned the calls.

I agree. Its human nature and I think this tendancy increases during moments in the game when the home team is riding a wave of momentum.

In general though, I tend to think style of play is a bigger determining factor sometimes. Put an athletic team that attacks the rim up against a slower team who can only grab and hold because they can't stay in front of the opposing team - and you're ripe for a one sided free throw shooting fest.

What plays did they think the refs got wrong?

I thought it was pretty even. They missed a few calls when Murphy was getting held and thrown around. Also, Releford didn't get touched on the and-1 they called.

In their last 2 games - Bama had 56 fouls called against them with only 18 against their two opponents.

I think that is an amazing stat.

From their perspective I know it's frustrating because they are on the brink of getting into the tourney.

Again MOST are NOT blaming the officiating for their losses. They were picked to finish 6th in the conference this year. They are young - something we also know about. Along with the frustration of losing.

I just wanted to get your opinions on the situation and you have helped me understand it better - thanks guys!

lose on the road and likely you'll feel the ref's ripped you off a bit. that's probably something now that's so predictable and 'certain', it should have an axiom named for it.

over the course of a game you hope calls/no-calls even out. but they don't. and i'm not talking about quantity but in fairness/consistency. so maybe in the course of the season, they end up evening out. that's why it is important to play home and home, imo. otherwise there IS an inherent inbalance in the schedule.

i will say that the blue bloods of any conference do seem to get more calls on the road than the middle tier programs. see that in football too.

I actually thought the charge calls against Bama were solid calls...I do think UF received the benefit of the home whistle on Saturday. There were a few times that Jacobs would have received foul calls if that game was at Bama that he did not get in Gainesville. At one point it was 7 or 8 fouls against Bama and zero for UF...let me say that is highly unusual as anytime you get 4 to 5 on one team and zero on the other...normally the officiating crew is going to call something to get the zero off the board. I have actually had coaches tell one of their role players to commit an obvious foul in that situation so a foul isn't called against a post defender because they know the situation as well and that a whistle is coming.

i do not think anyone should blame officials , a better team wins regardless , if bama played better down the stretch yesterday then they win , we actually out played bama yesterday but we have been out played down the stretch this year in a few games and no official could make up for our bone headed mistakes.

Seems to me that when a smaller team goes against physical bigs in a penetration game, and the bigs do play physical, the smaller team usually gets the benefit of the doubt and will draw the fouls - especially if at home.

Sympathy and crowd pressure do affect the refs. They do want to get out of the gym alive.

Over the past 10 non-overtime games UA averaged 18 fouls called against them and yesterday was not the only game they had more than 20. We averaged 13.

For the whole season the Gators are 7th in the nation in fewest fouls called against us while Bama is tied for 119th.

Conclusion of these facts is that the amount of fouls called yesterday is not an aberration based on previous games. Also during the last three minutes of the game Bama was trying to put us at the line so a few of the fouls were gotten deliberately that would not normally occur.

Grant has his guys playing a very rough style of defense. They fouls a lot. Heck on offense, most of their screens are fouls.

Hey guys...thanks for all your responses.....good discussion.

Now....where can I find the statistics on college basketball penalties by team - season totals.

And can we also find stats on away vs. home games season-long, not just per one game.

Thanks!

Conclusion of these facts is that the amount of fouls called yesterday is not an aberration based on previous games. Also during the last three minutes of the game Bama was trying to put us at the line so a few of the fouls were gotten deliberately that would not normally occur.
Yes......we are 7th and Bama is 119. That has to account for the difference to a fairly significant degree in their last 2 games.

I thought the game was well officiated. As for your Bama friends, you can tell them what I told mine: "Given your history in football you are hearby banished from complaining about officiating in any sport.....any time....ever!"
