From the article:

In fact, the real secret is, the real truth is that -- even if there is the sequester, even if it happens -- we're going to spend more as a country this year than we did last year. That perhaps is the best way of 'splaining what's going on. We've got this abject panic. We've got a full-blown crisis unfolding before our eyes, and if it happens, we're gonna be spending more money this year than we did last year.

Now, I want to put it to you this way. If spending more money this year than we did last year is going to bring this country to its knees, shouldn't that tell us that the government has way too much control over our lives? Shouldn't that tell us that they have seriously overreached? Shouldn't that tell us that we are way too dependent on government if all of this can happen while we spend $15 billion more than we spent last year? Even look at it in the previous way I mentioned it, cutting spending by one cent on the dollar. Every dollar we spend, we're gonna cut a penny. If even that is gonna bring the country to its knees, if that is going to cause all of these disasters, the cops say bye-bye, the first responders, out of there. The list, by the way, keeps expanding, this disaster list.

Isn't it safe to say that this is way out of whack, way too much government, way too much involved in our lives, way too much control, seriously have overreached. What would the founders think to hear about all the things our supposedly limited federal government has its tentacles on? Everything from school teachers to school principals, meat inspectors. It's stunning.

GWB increased discretionary spending 60% over 8 years, or 7.5% per year. Obama only increased discretionary spending 84% over 4 years, or 21% per year. In 12 years, we increased discretionary spending by a factor of 2.94 (1.6 x 1.84). If Obama wants to go back to Clinton-era tax rates, can we also go back to Clinton-era discretionary spending?

What do we have to show for all of this discretionary spending? High-speed rail? No. 20% of electricity production from alternatives? No. 20% reduction in fossil fuels usage? No. Best education system in the world? No. Smart grid for electrical power? No. Resolution of water shortages on the west coast and above the Oglalla Aquifer? No. A state-of-the-art system for dealing with natural disasters? No. (We still have FEMA.)

The $85 billion at issue is more like $40 billion.

In terms of a 3.8 trillion economy...it means little or nothing.
But the sad truth is that we have no resolve to do anything.

Easy answer Chem...we have $6T more debt than when he took office (headed for doubling our debt from 10-20 T in his 2 terms), we have 50 M on food stamps, and I would guess most of them have free cell phones or have them on order. We also have a poverty rate higher than when the war on poverty began. We have a work force utilization rate that sucks. Ave household income is down $5 K per household.

Hell, Obama has nailed it. He's accomplished a lot. Give the man a medal. Maybe Chavez will give him the Venezuelan medal of honor before he cashes it in to Cancer? Perhaps the Chicoms will honor him? Maybe Putin now that the election is over, trades a Russian medal for nuke reduction? Obama should have a closet full of "foreign jerseys" with the #1. He should have his own locker in the presidential palaces of our enemies. He's doing his best to help them. Give the man a break.
