Playing Hawthorne next. Porter from Hawthorne might be the top 10 grader in the state.
That should be a good game to watch. Seen Porter 3 times, he will be a top 25 player his senior year.
I grew up in the Panhandle and remember Malone well. I graduated HS IN 1954 and we played them every year. They were class C and usually had about 6 or 7 kids in the 12th grade. They had one sport BB and they played it year round. They came to games with 5 sometimes 6 guys on their team. They warmed up like the Globetrotters, with silk warmups on. I think all their games were away because they didn't have a gym, they practiced on a dirt court. I believe they won the Class C state championship 10 years in a row. Their is much more .. but i will stop.
Porter can play for sure, but he is not as good as you imply, and his dad is a major psycho "stage dad".....

If you're a really good B-ball player, you pretty much have to leave your hometown and go to prep school? Can't he just play summer ball with all of those kids?
Strange. But I don't follow HS b-ball like I do football.
I what I was focusing on was the "move on" part of his statement. You don't have to move on in high school. It is possibly your last time with your family. If you are a future All American, you will be even if you do not go to some academy.
Heck C. Walker played high level AAU ball in the summer. Otto Porter was missed by most people because he even stayed off the summer circuit. It did not stop him from becoming a star at Georgetown. So C.Walker will either make it or not, but staying in his home town with his family until he graduated from high school is unlikely to be a factor one way or another.

nflgator You are right about Malone. I grew up about 10 miles from there, playing for Marianna. This is near Chipola and several of Chipola's coaches came from Malone and Campbellton. Campbellton was also a premier (even smaller) school in Jackson County. They may still hold the state's longest winning streak at like 60. There is some great basketball in that part of the state.
For Walker to almost single handed beat Malone was and an outstanding feat.
Chris is usually defended by 2 and 3 of the opposition. because the remaining players on the team are not that good. He also makes up a huge part of their defense. Beating Malone was a big deal in the panhandle. Malone had beat one the top large schools in Alabama earlier, as well as bigger schools in Florida. Remember, Bonifay and Malone only have about 20 or so boys in the entire senior classes. These are smaaaaaall schools.
Malone probably has around 20 boys in their classes. Bonifay would probably have around 75. They are one of the larger schools in class 1A. Bonifay plays football. Malone has just basketball and baseball. Malone has some ridiculous amount of state basketball championships. It looks like Bonifay's coach finally figured out that to win they must feed Walker the ball. I'm not too impressed with Coach White. Tomorrow's game vs. West Gadsden should be interesting. The way to beat Bonifay is to shoot the three's. I understand West Gadsden can really hit the outside shot.
West Gadsden was the team Malone was dreading playing. They are a good team.
Haven't lived up there in years, but West Gadsden must be in Chattahoochee.
What is interesting about those small town teams up there is the entire town comes out and packs those little gyms. Basketball is much more popular in the panhandle than in Central Florida with greater attendance.

A few years ago Gadsden County consolidated their schools. West Gadsden is Chattahoochee and Greensboro. East Gadsden is Quincy and Havana.

Not to take anything away, but he is playing man against boys there. Some of those blocks were hilarious and would never happen in college basketball. I wonder if some of those kids were in 8th grade.
Still, can't wait till he gets to UF. But with a big man, they usually have the biggest adjustment to make moving to each subsequent level.. but especially from highschool>NCAA which is the 1st level they can't COMPLETELY rely on athleticism.
Gator Congratulations to the 1A Champions: Bonifay, Holmes County!

Gator-Bound Walker Leads Holmes County To Class 1A Championship
>> The impact that 6-9 University of Florida signee Christopher Walker had in the Class 1A State Championship game couldn't be measured simply by his points.
The Senior Center for Bonifay Holmes County did score 30 of his team's 59 points in the Blue Devils' 59-40 win over West Gadsden on Wednesday at The Lakeland Center..
But his impact was felt in many other ways as well. He also had 15 rebounds, 7 blocked shots during the one quarter when he didn't score at all, Holmes County turned a one point lead into an 11 point lead because West Gadsden double and triple teamed him leaving openings for other Blue Devil players. <<
