Too much is made of inconsequential matters too often.
But as comparison consider ...
Would this photo of Nancy Reagan sitting on Mr T's lap Christmas, 1983 been more controversial if there had been Internet hype to ramp up the outrage?
Did Her Majesty's British subjects complain as much when she "parachuted" into the London Olympic stadium with 007?
And lastly, would Mrs.Obama have done this Oscar cameo for any other Holly wood producer besides Weinstein or was it a special thanks to him because he was a generous contributor to Obama's campaign?
Does Bill Clinton's Golden Globes appearance exempt him from criticism because he is no longer a sitting president? Would Mrs. Obama's appearance have been less offensive if it were at the 2018 Oscar telecast? Will she even be relevant then?
I said I don't have a huge problem with it, not that I didn't have a problem with it at all. I really don't think it's a big deal -- but I started this thread, which I don't often do, I guess I felt like it was my obligation to keep the discussion going and trying to at least get some insight from it, which I certainly have.
Sometimes things don't seem like a big deal, and sometimes they do, but you might not know until later on down the road until you've really stewed on it, or discussed it with someone. I saw this was going around the news-world and no one had started a topic on it, so I thought it might be interesting.
Here's a link to something criticizing Laura in 2004:
Does any rational and realistic person even watch the Oscars? I never understood giving awards to people so irrelevant in our daily lives. Maybe that's why Michelle was there.
I agree that it's nonsense, but occasionally enjoyable nonsense. I like movies quite a bit and still go to the theater for the ones I really want to see, but I don't take this particular competition seriously and like to rate them on my own. Michelle's appearance was mildly amusing, like the rest of the show.

Good post, except Michelle's hypothetical 2018 Oscar presentation could not be "less offensive" than last nights, since it wasn't offensive at all to anyone not harboring already hyper active hostility.
I have stopped watching movies because actors make their political opinions public. Now it's basically the history channel, national geo, and Discovery. At least animals and nature don't have any mindless opinions. I watched Skyfall Saturday night, it was the first movies I have seen in over a year. Pretty good one at that.

Try to not let politics take over your enjoyment of life's few pleasures. "Frazier" was one of the best TV comedy series ever I thought, even if Kelsey Grammar is a republican. Would i agree with Billy Donovan on politics - DK and don't care. Hope he stays here forever.
You most certainly would not agree with Donovan about anything. He's one of us darn Christians.

I couldn't care less if Barbara, Laura, Nancy, Hillary or Martha Washington did it. On the list of things to be offended by this rates so far down it wouldn't make a small blip.

Wow...Row and I totally agree on something.
Seriously, Frasier was one of, if not THE best comedy shows ever--it was very well written, while the delivery/timing/chemistry of all the actors supercedes most any other tv show I have ever seen. Wish it had stayed on.
The fact that the character Frasier lasted 20 years total between Cheers and Frasier is amazing in this day and time. Doubt we will ever see any character last that long again.
Of course it's an uneven playing field. Conservatives are playing on the road against a SEC West opponent. Have to be much better to overcome the home field crowd and slanted calls from the reffs. Right now Conservatives aren't nearly good enough to pull it off.
Michelle Obama's Oscars dress too revealing for Iranian media
Iran's Fars news agency Photoshops First Lady's dress to cover up her neckline in coverage of Academy Awards ceremony
Iran's semi-official Fars news agency Photoshopped pictures of Michelle Obama at the Oscars to conform to Iranian restrictions on images of the female body in the media.
Fars, which is affiliated to the Islamic republic's elite Revolutionary Guards, redesigned the US first lady's dress so that it covered her chest and shoulders in a picture showing her announcing that Argo had won best picture, via a video link from the White House.
Rules dictate that Iranian women shown on Iran's state television should have a hijab that covers their hair, arms and legs. The length of the censor's ruler varies for foreigners. A foreign woman travelling inside the Islamic republic should comply with the same restriction on Iranian women, but those shown on TV, such as dignitaries or actors, are tolerated without the hijab, up to a point.
Recalls to mind a New York ultra-Orthodox Jewish publication digitally removing Hillary Clinton and another woman from the photo taken in the White House war room the night the Bin Ladin operation went down.

Let me clarify--a real, human character is more precisely what I was I referring to.
Although your post made me recall one of the funniest lines I heard in the movie "Night Shift" when Henry Winkler walks in on a shift change to replace one of the biggest morons ever. "Boy, that Barney Rubble--what an actor"
It's definite PR and that's how politics is played in this country. The public are idiots and will fall for this time and time again. So I don't blame Obama for doing it. I hate their ideology but they are great politicians.
Why Hollywood did it? I'm sure some payback, some friendship connections, publicity and frankly the FLOTUS is a younger more glamorous version of previous First Ladies.

First paragraph is spot on. And the second paragraph is spot on until you got to more glamorous.
