Matt Doherty's performance tonight
I don't start a lot of announcer threads, and I try not to go in for the "everyone's against us" narrative that's so easy for fans to take at face value, but did it seem to anyone else that Matt Doherty was just extraordinarily critical tonight?
I thought the PBP guy spent a little bit too much on our perceived flaws, but he at least always made a point of emphasizing that we were the number five team in the country and every comparison was being made against the elite teams.
But Doherty seemed to spend the entire game shredding us and talking up Arkansas. He was showering praise on the Razorbacks all night, going on about how they were playing so well, at one point actually saying "they have Florida right where they want them" when we were up by six. Arkansas never actually led in the game.
He kept castigating us for getting beaten on the boards by Arkansas, and we out-rebounded them by eight.
At one point we were up 14 with a little more than 10 minutes to go and Doherty said, "Florida has a 14-point lead, but it doesn't feel nearly that big sitting courtside."
And then there was the play where Young ripped down an offensive board over three different Razorbacks, decided to pass it out while surrounded by those three players and two passes later Rosario hit a three. And Doherty intoned, "Yeah, they got the three, but I'd rather see Young take it up strong there."
I don't know, am I just paranoid? Or did anyone else notice this?

Most of what he said was legitimate. He did over state Arkansas at times, but we are a much better team when we play inside out.

It depends, when guards are pressing us and switching on screens yes we need to work inside out, when they're backing off or playing zone we shoot the three.

Doherty was such a good coach that he turned UNC into an NIT team en route to being canned.

I thought he was better than he usually is. At least he talked about the actual game instead of where dinner was going to be, unlike some announcers.

I absolutely noticed it, Maddux. In particular, I noticed the three things you mentioned.
Listening to this guy, I always feel like he is watching a different game than i am. He just says weird things.

Doherty was talking about UF in terms of elite teams & how we needed to fix things. I saw nothing wrong with what he said, it seemed to be pretty much on target for what UF needs to do be to the best of the best.

I agree with the overall points of the OP regarding Doherty. The guy seemed to be commenting on a different game than was what was played. He once said, "Florida is up by 12, but it feels less than that." I wanted to tweet him when we got up by twenty and ask him if it seemed like we were winning by less than that.
That said, we were out rebounded in the game by 3. There may have been a some times in the game when we lead in rebounding, but Arkansas kicked our butts on the boards for most of the second half.

Well, there are two different topics here. The first is the larger discussion Doherty and his PBP guy were having over Florida's place in the national title race. Again, while I thought they were slightly over-emphasizing some of our flaws, I didn't have many problems there.
The second topic is the conversation Doherty was having over the game itself. There, I thought he was being relentlessly critical of the team that ended up winning easily while endlessly praising the team that lost by 17 points.

Was Doherty the one getting the Mikes mixed up?

Yep, you're right. I was going by the MVG thread, but the official boxscore says Arkansas +3.

ESPN ScoreCenter has the rebounds at 38-30 Gators.

Doherty knows his Xs and Os so as a student of the game his commentary was mostly fine. But...as Maddux alluded to... there were times when it felt like Doherty was rooting for Arkansas. He had the Gators "on the ropes" so many times I kept thinking the scoreboard must be wrong.
If Doherty, or any outsider for that matter, wants to "fix" the Gators then find a way to get them all healthy again. We had basically six guys tonight against a high energy team and I think we did all right. I didn't hear the announcers talking about that too much.
As stated before Doherty knows the game but his personality is extremely grating. In fact it has been long rumored that his losing ACC record was a factor in him getting fired by UNC but the truth was he lost his team and they didn't want to play for him.
I could see that happening...

Sometime during the first half we were up by seven, I think, and heard him say we were on the ropes. WTF My wife even jumped off the couch with that one.
The comment is obviously wrong but is something a coach might say to get some more fire in his troops. The problem is he wasn't there to be Arkansas' coach!

It was a problem. There was times after some pretty tough comments about UF that I thought about turning the sound off. It was that bad for me.
As somebody above said, fix the injuries and we're fine. Doherty may not like that, but crapola on him if he doesn't.
