Win at all costs. From Bear Bryant to Saban. Bama doesn't give a damn as long as they get their trophies. I'm hoping we don't sell out like that.

I get the money/cars stuff, and if that's proven then they should be buried.

The rest of the stuff is fine. I'm not sure what's wrong with having analysts on staff. As long as they aren't breaking the rules then its a great use of resources.

Over signing isn't a problem, unless they break the rules. Which they aren't. The kids know the deal and the risks involved. If they are okay with it, then why do you care?

So, the same thing every year, and no action (as usual) from NCAA. I've seen this picture many times before...

See this is what's wrong- if the NCAA was actually interested in helping the kids instead of just serving to put a nice spin on the cartel that is major college athletics then they'd be much more interested in a kid getting his scholarship pulled for not being a starter than they would be about a booster slipping a recruit a few hundred bucks.

I mean I agree that buying recruits is and should be illegal but c'mon why isn't actively screwing up the lives of young men-- which make no mistake is what the attrition/oversigning cycle that Bama employs does is an even larger issue.

What Saban does at Bama is worse for the supposed beneficiary of college athletics (the student athletes themselves) than what happened with Cam, hell its worse than SMU- but since its technically within the rules its all good, after all the NCAA doesn't give a crap about student athletes its all about the mad cash they can make off their backs and the only reason to get involved is if the appearance of corruption threatens that cash flow.

Back to this article (great find, btw).
This paragraph speaks volumes about the mentality of the oversigning coaches:

"To be clear, this new NCAA measure doesn’t require any school to give four-year scholarships—it merely gives them the option to do so. That makes the “no” votes of Alabama, LSU, et al., even more appalling. Though some smaller schools cried poor, claiming four-year deals would bust their athletic budgets, the football powerhouses can make no such claim. As CBSSports.com’s Jerry Hinnen explains, “In short: because these schools don't want to promise their athletes a full four-year college education, they've decided the athletes at other schools shouldn't have the benefit of that promise, either.”

5 or 6 down a few more to go

Chase Goodbread ‏@ChaseGoodbread
Per Saban: Four arrested UA players "no longer associated with the football program."

Chase Goodbread ‏@ChaseGoodbread
More from Saban: WR Danny Woodson suspended for team rules vio, won't participate in spring practice.

Chase Goodbread ‏@ChaseGoodbread
Saban: WR Marvin Shinn elected not to work out in the offseason and will not participate in the spring.

Of course they don't want other teams to offer 4 year scholarships- you think it'd be easy to explain to the parents why Florida would be willing to offer a full ride for a degree while Alabama only offers a couple of semesters:

"Sorry Mrs. Jones we don't believe in Billy all that much and need to be free to kick his butt to the curb if someone better comes along."

That's not a great pitch to parents.

Go to class, make your grades, work hard, keep out of trouble or GTFO.

How about if you do all those things but don't produce on the field as expected, or a high school kid looks like he might be better at your position than you are? Do you still deserve to lose your scholarship then?

if recruits feel threatened about losing their scholarship due to non-production or other issues, they shouldn't go to alabama--very simple. they should go to a school that guarantees a 4 year deal no matter what they do.

Name a single recruit out there who doesn't think he's going to win the starting job his first year, break all kinds of records and win a Heisman. They all have unrealistic expectations until they actually hit the field with all the other superstars from other high schools. The coaches know this, that is why they stroked their egos all the way up until the name is on the LOI.

When Meyer was pushing recruiting rules to the breaking point...and Florida was winning titles...most of you applauded him. He was "outrecruiting" or "outworking" or just being "smarter" than other coaches. You loved him.

Now other coach pushes the rules and he's a cheating SOB with no moral compass.

Be careful about that "we want to win the right way" stuff. Sounds like Richt.

I don't recall Meyer "pushing recruiting rules to the breaking point". He wouldn't stop recruiting a kid who verbaled to another school, but that was never against the rules, letter or spirit. I never remember Meyer intentionally over-signing, then "managing" his roster to make room for the new guys.

Could you provide a concrete example of Meyer's recruiting indiscretions, please?

Lots of other articles out there talking about Meyer's recruiting both at UF and now at OSU.

The first link is to Chadd Scott, who got fired from his radio talk show job and hasn't been able to get another job in broadcasting over a year later. He has been relegated to blogging. He expresses opinion, but provides no proof. The second article references the team situation, not recruiting.

I'm still waiting to find any definitive source that shows Meyer "managed" his roster, driving kids away to make room for better talent.

I grabbed the first couple hits from Google. There are plenty more. I remember the threads in here about his recruiting, the investigations (which were always OK, just like Saban's). And circumstances surrounding his career font necessarily equate to his blog being wrong.

So is over signing the pinnacle which makes Saban horrible? So if Meyer didn't push that (legal) line all the other stuff was OK?

FWIW, as long as neither is breaking the rules (and they didn't or haven't) I don't care. I think if Saban was over signing and not winning NCs this wouldn't be an issue. People hate winners.

Now other coach pushes the rules and he's a cheating SOB with no moral compass.

Be careful about that "we want to win the right way" stuff. Sounds like Richt.
Meyer wasn't doing this or anything close- if anything he pushed too hard at times to keep people in the program instead of tossing them to the curb.
