Default NYT v Tesla

Not sure if anyone is following this, but it's intriguing on many levels.

To recap:

The NY Times test drives a Tesla S and its charging stations and calls it a failure.

Then Tesla's CEO writes a powerful rebuttal backed with detailed data that clearly refutes much of the NYT author's story.

Last night, the NY Times author fires back.

One one level, it brings into question (once again) the veracity and sincerity of media. It also illustrates the growing power of modern, social media; wherein the Tesla CEO already had an effective microphone of his own from which to launch his rebuttal. Traditionally, his avenues to refute would have been limited and may have skewed the perception of the rebuttal. It's also interesting regarding the relative effectiveness of EVs.

Here's another reporter from CNN doing the drive. Totally different results.

I thought the NYT would love Tesla's acoustic set.

The best comment was why did Broder only recharge enough to get to the next charger....would be like a 1000 mile journey and getting 1/4 tank of gas because their was another gas station that you liked right at the distance you gassed up for.

If you read the NY Times author's response to Elon Musk, check the comments below his article. He is roasted.

Elon Musk is the smart man in the "room". Not Broder.

Fraudulent reporting from the Old Gray Lady?

Shocking.

I drive an EV and have found the performance matched what was promised....I have filled my tank twice since Nov 3. The rest had been charged by electrons....

Exiled - thanks for the thread. It is an interesting read on journalism, privacy and technology.

I learned a lot about journalism in college when my roommate was assigned a weekly article to write about "Finding the Perfect Sandwich". One week, he came back to the dorm talking about how he had a bad day, girlfriend dumped him and he had to write this article so he effectively took it all out on the sandwich shop in his article.

As you can imagine, the stuff hit the fan...the owner (it was a multi-location shop) blasted the article, took his advertising away from the college paper and my roommate got fired, the paper printed a retraction and life went on. Reporters, business people, white folks, Filipinos, etc. are people and inherently flawed will not deliver "truth" 100% of the time.

People are biased. Style guides and journalistic practices exist to eliminate that bias (as much as possible). Your friend was not really participating in journalism. Articles that aim to determine the "best" of some category (or reviews), are inherently opinion pieces and not subject to the same scrutiny.
