I realize that this thread is looking for athletes, but for me the word "phony" is also most closely associated with Tim Brando and Brent Musberger. I've met both multiple times in private settings and felt as though I needed a shower after every encounter.
I vote for Cam Newton as well. They don't come much less genuine than that!
I would give Deion (I am alergic to tackling) Sanders honorable mention, not just for his flamboyance with the whole Neon and Primetime thing but also for his infidelity while professing Christianity.

Keyshawn Johnson. Only Bucs fans will appreciate this one (and some may not agree) but this guy had the biggest mouth and the least to back it up of any football player I can think of offhand. There are plenty of contenders - Ryan Leaf and Brian Bosworth come immediately to mind - but based on his book and his mouth I expected to see a future HOF receiver when the Bucs got Johnson from the Jets (for a first round pick IIRC). Instead we got a chronic malcontent/braggart who wasn't very fast, wasn't very elusive, seldom got significant yards after the catch, had decent but not great hands, and whose principal abilities were blocking and a willingness to go over the middle into traffic - admittedly nice talents but hardly enough to justify all that "give me the damn ball" crap.

If it is all time it has to be Bobby Bowden, the biggest hyprocrite in sports history.
Naw, I hated Bowden for years but lets be real somehow, defying logic and any prediction I would have made 5 or 10 years ago, Bobby ended up being a better guy than JoePa.
Hard to not put him on the list when he goes up to pOSU and starts spouting off all of the same tired old BS about that being the "greatest school" with the "greatest fans", referring to "school up north", "assembling the greatest staff in the country", blah, blah, blah.
I dont know how even he can look himself in the eyes and believe anything he says. He must be a robot. Phony is probably the perfect word to describe his act.
In all seriousness, Lance Armstrong takes it.
Everything he ever accomplished came out of a bottle. And his winning all those titles only spurred on others to dope too just to keep up with him.
All the crap about libel and slander to his name...and then he finally admits everything.
Slime.
Just because a ball isn't involved doesn't mean it's not a sport. Motorsports are a team sport. Racing requires an intense amount of focus, coordination, and strategy on the part of the team and the driver(s). To be a professional racing driver, you have to be an athlete (yes, even in NASCAR). The g-forces, the bumping around, the temperatures, the mental fatigue all add up. This video highlights a bit of what it takes to run the 24 Hours of LeMans

But he did all that at Utah too (BYU). We did not mind it when he was here.
