I saw a blurb on ESPN about a finding that soccer matches (some pretty high profile ones I guess) have been fixed over the last couple of years. My first thought was "has anyone ever actually WATCHED a soccer game?" Its pretty obvious there is A LOT of acting going on.

The games are unwatchable, but from what I've seen there's a lot of drama involved.

The bad thing is, I see kids in my son's age group (11 yrs old) flopping already. When they see the pros do it, they follow suit. I told my son he can never, ever flop or I'l do to him what the King of England did to his foppish son in the movie Braveheart. It was on TV Friday and that is exactly what I said in my mini lecture on real men.

My brother-in-law in DC loves this garbage because he played it for 1 season while at Dennison University is what I'm told. What a birth canal!

Spikes was very clearly making fun of him. He wasn't flopping to try to get a call.

By the way, thanks for posting that clip. I was looking for that for a while after the game, and eventually I gave up on it.

How is this any different than the average Duke basketball player? Flopping is a problem in soccer, but no more than basketball. Soccer is also plenty of contact and can be quite dangerous. I once knocked someone out cold and suffered a concussion myself going up for a header. Some poor dude put his head in the way of where I was going to head the ball and I nailed his head instead of the ball. He fell to the ground like a rag doll, and I stumbled around for about 10 seconds before falling myself (or so I am told).

The silly arse flopping that some soccer players do gives the sport a black eye, but what you say is true. Soccer is much more physical than most people who've never played it realize.

No doubt it is. I broke my ankle playing it in 7th grade...My main problem with it is that it is:

Understand. I never used to watch it except for World Cup finals... until I started helping coach youth soccer several years ago and got into it... moved on to coaching competitive teams.

Like many sports, when you know it better and can appreciate the degree of difficulty of what the players do, it's less boring to watch. With soccer for me, the level of interest also depends on playing styles of the teams, and whether they have exceptional talents (like Messi or Ronaldo) to watch.

But I can understand people seeing it as a boring spectator sport... though not on the level of golf, or NASCAR or baseball... or rhythmic gymnastics.

Sure its a matter of taste.. I know that some people can't get enough. I played it coming through the school system along with baseball, footbal, bball, etc. It was more fun to play than to watch. I can say the same thing about baseball too.

Soccer is definitely an acquired taste. I think they should either move the goals closer, or have one less player. I do like the World Cup, with all the different nations being involved. (Or a lot of them, I should say)
