Default UF deserves officiating like the traditional powers

I think Coach D and the Gators have earned the same respect from the officials that Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, and North Carolina receive. We are playing a home game and the foul disparity is Ole Miss 21 free throw attempts to UF 3. I would bet that another team has never had 18 more free throws at Duke (during coach K's tenure), KU, UNC, Kentucky, or Syracuse (w/ Boeheim) for that matter. If anyone can dig up that big of a foul discrepancy against one of those teams playing a home game I would love to see it!

Honestly as long as we win, it's good for us to learn how to fight through the refs trying to eff us... as long as it's in the regular season and not during the tourney.

we get some home cookin' in terms of calls in alot of games. but, it seems to me, that we have alot more games than most that it appears the refs want to show they aren't "partial" to the home crowd. the refs 'bend over backwards' to demonstrate they are 'impartial.' it seems like we're the ones they like to do that to in the o'dome.

I don't have much of a problem with fouls they didn't call on Ole Miss, but the calls they were making against us were ridiculous. Every ticky-tacky tap, bump, etc. was being called against us. I was amazed at how much we won considering the following factors:
-Refs
-Henderson's unusually high 3pt % even though they were contested
-Florida's inability to control the loose balls (many went off us and out of bounds)
-Off shooting nights from Boynton & Wilbekin

If any 1 of those items doesn't happen, we win by 20-25 points and if all of those items don't happen we win by 40+.

This.

No one team should get favoritism or deference from referees. That goes against the very essence of being a professional official.

The fact that so many teams consistently get the "benefit of the doubt" speaks to serious problems within the sport itself. Human error is always going to be a factor that you can't eliminate; but when certain teams get the benefit of the doubt at the expense of other teams, it only kills the integrity of the game.

I wasn't pissed off at the fact UF wasn't getting any calls...I was pissed off at the fact Ole Miss was getting so many. IF you're going to ref a tight game--call it tight both ways. It's simply inexcusable to single out one team to call things tight on and let the other team do what they will simply because one team is winning and the other isn't. The refs are there to ensure fairness--and tonight, they did anything but. I don't think advocating for "preferential" treatment is the right way to balance it out...all I'd want is for them to do their jobs fairly.

Anyone remember Young getting called for a foul after forcing Buckner to take a bad jumper early in the game? Doherty seemed as baffled by that call as I was. Did Patric brush Buckner's legs on the follow through?

UF maybe got Spurrier officiating tonight. When UF was blowing people out under SOS, officials tended to give the benefit of the doubt to the opponent. They did not want to make a bad call for UF that led to the blow out and probably figured if they made a bad against UF, UF would win anyway. There seemed to be a lot of that type of officiating tonight.

And they official were right. Giving a close call to UF might well have led to a blow out at several times during that game. Giving UMs the benefit of the doubt did not keep UF from winning handily.

It sure was a factor in our loss vs Butler a few years ago.

Maybe Billy could hire Bruce Pearl and sic him on the ref's on nights like these. He could get Bruce to take off his shirt, paint his torso orange and blue and put a dog chain collar around his neck with studs on it, release him when needed. LOL
I have always wondered why Billy keeps his tie on and doesn't get his point across in these types of games. This Ole Miss game with us up most of the game, he wasn't going to get into this. But the Butler game in the NCAA tournament was a game in which he should have called a timeout and blasted the officials and then stayed on them. Pearl had this down to a science. Jim Valvano was another coach who could play the officials and help keep the refs balanced. If you want another coaching example, Coach K, "Ritso the Rat", keeps his tie buttoned down but he finds ways to get to the officials to get his team from getting screwed. Don't tell me he doesn't get fired up. A hall of fame coach who everyone gives props to. Billy can only be billy, but he needs to watch game film of other great sideline coaches and improve on taking on the Zebras!

The story is that mild mannered looking John Wooden with his calm demeanor and rolled up program was one of the coaches who rode officials the hardest. So unless you are sitting close enough to hear what Donovan says to officials, you may not know how much he is getting on them.

BTW, I do agree the Butler NCAA game is a case where the officials made a couple of calls like the offensive phantom foul on Murphy that not only stopped UF from blowing them out in the second half, but ignited them on a run to win the game.

Billy has been a lot more willing to engage with the refs lately than he was early in his career. Last night was one of those times, and the zebras deserved every scream.

The shooting foul called on Young when replays showed he didn't even touch the other player is just one example.

after one particularly egregious call that had me yelling from the upper 2nd tier, i thought BD was about to get a technical at one point. during a time out he had an extended "conversation" with one of the refs,...it was peculiar in a way since i don't think BD ever made eye contact w/ the one particular ref. another ref had to come over to break the 'conversation' up after a minute.

I didn't see the game, so obviously I can't speak to calls. The only thing I know is that for you guys to be right about how bad the officiating was, it must have been HORRIBLE. Half of your team's shots were 3 pointers it appears from the box score. I also, as I've said before, think free throw discrepancy is a overly simplistic way to show unbalanced foul calls. Often times its deserved.

That being said, maybe it WAS awful. I'm not saying I know that it wasn't.

we weren't as aggressive as ole miss at going to the rim since they were in zone alot and we did settle for the perimeter shot.

but the same sort of contact when we did take it inside was not called on our end as it was on the ole miss end. i don't think there was a bad call on us, but when there's what looks to be some ticky tack calls on one end and not on the other it draws the ire of the crowd, for sure.

given that, you could also single out some stuff that didn't get called on us, that i thought could have, given the precedent that was [i thought] established. and there's was several plays i thought was great defense [all ball, etc] that got called on us, that mystified me. i'm sure though, you isolate that play you could probably see the foul, but the 'evenness' of the calls for the game, just wasn't there. and yes, as you pointed out, there would have been a discrepancy in the number of calls since the rebs were more aggressive w/ their attacks to the rim.

The AFA is 5-2 in the MWC so far. The MWC is very highly rated this season.

Often times its deserved.

That being said, maybe it WAS awful. I'm not saying I know that it wasn't.
No, it was not "awful" - there were no missed calls that I'd term egregious. UF got called for lots of nitpicky, borderline, ticky-tack fouls and that same stuff was not being called on the other end. The problem was inconsistency, giving the impression that the refs were attempting to keep the game close.
