Doctors are forced to hand over confidential records on all their patients to the NHS
Big brother strikes again in the UK Get used to more of this in the USA...
GPs are to be forced to hand over confidential records on all their patients’ drinking habits, waist sizes and illnesses.
The files will be stored in a giant information bank that privacy campaigners say represents the ‘biggest data grab in NHS history’.
They warned the move would end patient confidentiality and hand personal information to third parties.
But Ross Anderson, professor of security engineering at Cambridge University, said: ‘Under these proposals, medical confidentiality is, in effect, dead and there is currently nobody standing in the way.’ Nick Pickles, of the privacy group Big Brother Watch, said NHS managers would now be in charge of our most confidential information.
He added: ‘It is unbelievable how little the public is being told about what is going on, while GPs are being strong-armed into handing over details about their patients and to not make a fuss.
‘Not only have the public not been told what is going on, none of us has been asked to give our permission for this to happen.’
The data grab is part of Everyone Counts, a programme to extend the availability of patient data across the Health Service.

I am completely confident that action like this wouldn't be a precursor to using tax structure or even threat of withholding care as a way to direct the lifestyle of their citizens.
Heh.
And there will still be people who would say it doesn't restrain liberty just because the government is using its power over people's wellbeing to dictate their actions.

One good thing that might come of all this is curing some people of their hypochondria. I'll gladly give up a few years of my life to keep prying eyes out of it.

Right wing slippery slope warnings have no more validity now than they did in the 60s.

Except for all the sliding that has taken place, of course.

Just wait till their records get hacked. I can't wait to hear all the BS excuses they'll present those people with.
One big data bank of info is akin to putting a big wall around a castle and expecting it to be siege proof. It didn't work in the medieval times and it won't work now.
More proof that the liberals are stupid, careless history flunkies.

it's wrong, if true. i've not heard of of, and til this moment, forgot about this thread. i will look into it, right now, a third party, your insurance, can see your records. you know that paper you have to sign every year at your doctor's office? that's giving the right of a third party access to your records. otherwise, without your consent, HIPPA wouldn't allow that to happen. and of course for stupid reasons that insurance companies always want to see your records, in order to deny your claims as having been 'pre existing', although, that no longer applies (yay!).
anyhow, i'm saying i will look that up, as i don't agree with sharing our personal medical records more than necessary (that necessarily evil third party payer), and then i'll get back to this thread.
but it did start with the conservatives in britain, who're trying to do away with their public health system. (i know that's shocking)
MOI: Thanks for the welcome back, friend!

third parties see your health records all the time. as soon as you sign that paper at your docs. and if you don't sign it, they won't treat you, unless you pay with cash. because that paper you sign gives them the right to send whatever the insurance company requests, to the insurance company. yet, you have no problem with that. too weird.

I am guessing that it may have to do with the fact that your insurance company does not also operate with force of law in almost every other area of your life. Yep, too weird.
