So Major Applewhite hooked up with a student
3 years ago, never made public, just came out. They call her an "adult student", whatever that means. That athletic department makes a train wreck look organized right now.

Besides the fact he was married I don't personally see the big deal. If she's of age and consenting there should be no issue. He's a coach, not a teacher.

He's an adult, she's an adult. Who cares besides his wife? Perception wise if she's 18, it feels more like he took advantage of her (which is disagree with). But the sounds of it make it seem like she was older, so it's just an extra marital affair. Now if he got her a job....and owned a motorcycle...

Just saw on ESPN that Chantel just gave her take on how Michigan athletes are getting trained not to be "fished" like Manti.
Honestly, were I a Michigan athlete, Chantel would be more my thing than online chats and phone calls from Hawaii. . . but maybe that's me.

Well it's serious enough that their board of regents has called an emergency meeting over it. If I had to guess it is probably as much about them not being informed and wanting to hear what the discipline was as anything else, but man Dodds can't do anything right lately.

"Only" marital infidelity can wreck people's lives. If your viewpoint is that it's nothing to do with the university, I'd contend it is. Not only is he a highly paid professional with standards of conduct that are expected by his employers, doesn't he owe it to his wife to be better than this? "Just" an affair seems to be scraping the barrel of decency to me but perhaps I hold myself to a higher level of accountability.
This 'indiscretion' took place in Fiesta Bowl Week, Jauary 2009. For the record, that is (according to various online sources) the same MONTH his wife gave birth to their daughter Lila. Giving him a pass is disgusting. I don't care how fantastic the guy is off the record - having a fling whilst your wife is 9 months pregnant is about as morally deplorable as I can stomach...

Who said it was moral? I can disagree with his actions but to each his own. If he isn't bringing it to work then what right do I have? But then I'm a libertarian and not prone to trying to regulate others' lives. I guess you're used to it with 2 million cameras watching your every move...
And for those arguing a double standard, based on what I know that completely misses the mark. Applewhite wasn't a teacher of the student nor coaching her. Those situations place the teacher and coach in positions of power that could result in coercion or abuse of their authority.

Wasn't Jon Gruden's wife a cheerleader at UT when he was an assistant there? Nobody made a big deal out of that, and it isn't. As long as there isn't a teacher-student relationship and both parties are consenting adults, it's nobody's business.

The Texas people are hinting it was a trainer in their athletic department. Kinda grays things up a bit if true, especially with regards to Kearney.

This has already been questioned but where did any of us say it was the right thing? I specifically stated they were both adults and the only one that should have an issue with it is his wife. Who cares if it was during the bowl week or not. Had he not been married would it matter if he was seeing somebody during that week? He's a coach, not a teacher, and should be entitled to date whomever he wants; or at least should be if its legal. Of course that's saying if he wasn't married.

I think he's a scumbag but cheating on your wife shouldn't be cause for discipline at your place of employment. She's a student. Not an athlete. Not an employee. Why is it a bad thing for a coach, many of whom are just slightly older than the student body, to have relationships with students? Provided there is no potential for conflict of interest I really don't see an issue.

These coaches are public figures and represent the university. The standard is a little different than any Joe Blow.
