Breaking: Ray Lewis used a banned substance to recover this season.
SI and ESPN reporting that Ray Lewis used a banned substance (something called: Deer antler velvet extract) to aid in recovering from his triceps injury. Figures.
Quote:
According to Sports Illustrated, Ray Lewis contacted the sports science company S.W.A.T.S in October to help with recovery from his torn triceps.
The owner of the company, Mitch Ross, allegedly recorded conversations between himself and Lewis. A program that included a deer-antler spray that includes IGF-1, which is on the NFL's list of banned substances, was prescribed. "Just pile me up and just send me everything you got, because I got to get back on this this week," Lewis said. There figures to be an investigation, but it won't wrap up until after Sunday's Super Bowl. At that point, Lewis will be retired. Jan. 29 - 12:28 pm et

I just bought some of that stuff myself. It's a hormone (amino chain of 70) called IGF-1 that's your liver produces when your pituitary glands secretes GH into your bloodstream. But it's not a laboratory made drug and readily available on the internet and perfectly safe!
He could have gotten similar results with plain ole free-form amino acids.
This is much ado about nothing, IMHO.

Seriously, I know that theoretically this could be used to build muscle (since it aids tissue regeneration), but it seems pretty clear that its use here was therapeutic-- this is almost as dumb as the adderall suspensions earlier this year.

no surprise--probably 80% of the players in the nfl juice up on something to recover faster, build mass, etc. -- they just never get caught.

I have looked into the research on this stuff before, you would would literally need to take 2 bottles of the stuff a day to get any results from it.
Here is an old thread:
http://www.gatorcountry.com/swampgas...d.php?t=189781
I found a study: http://www.biosynergy.com/IGF.htm
Quote:
daily dosage of velvet from 850-1,200 mg
your stuff has 11mg per two sprays, you would have to take the 1 1/2 bottles to get close to what the study used daily.
Quote:
In this study, athletes who took dietary New Zealand deer antler velvet for two weeks showed significantly reduced elevation of creatine kinase levels in their bloodstream and recovered from muscle soreness 24 hours earlier than subjects on placebo,". Creatine kinase, a substance found in the bloodstream, was used as an indicator of muscle-tissue damage in the study.
meaning it inhibited muscle breakdown so you where not rebuilding any new muscle.
take it if you want but if you want to get bigger and stronger I would recommend against it.

I've been reading everything from the New England Journal of Medicine to the Mayo-clinic reviews on it. It's safe even in large doses.
It's perfectly safe and it helps your joints, cartilage, tendons, skin and bones become more healthy, or repairs them.
It's naturally occurring in Deer antler velvet that is purified and extracted for internal consumption by humans.
I suggest you do your own research and find a quality supplier - there's a lot of fakes out there.

The real story is A-Rod and his PED use at Miami clinic. But then again, A-Rod is A God.

Since this superbowl is ALL about Lewis, the likes of which I have never seen, I think this is the real story.

Yeah, it seems like a double standard there. If your legitimately injured then I see nothing wrong with fixing your injury with deer antler velvet..

This is why I bought a whole lot of amino acids too. The Bulgarians have been feeding them to their athletes with great success - we've essentially copied their system at Colorado Olympic Training Center..
It's really all about the free-form amino acids.

Branch chain amino acids- plenty of studies on the positive recovery effects...
A strength coach, Charles Poliquin is a strong believer in them.

Snake oil. A shame pro athletes have so much money to devote to it.

BCAA = protein, more or less.
If you get accused of using steroids it's because you eat and lift hard, not because of BCAAs.
