Antibiotic effectiveness will soon be challenged
As if we didn't have enough already to worry about; global warming, asteroids, war, solar flares, bad reality TV, off-season uni threads and now this! Maybe this is how the worlds population problem gets solved. That is if Radical Islam doesn't do it first! It also seems like infections are getting worse on top of it all...maybe some of the hospitals are the breeding grounds? I don't know about ya'll but I've known quite a few folks in recent years that were really seriously challenged with infections and nearly died. Obviously some do...any personal experiences?

Antibiotics scare the heck out of me. My immune system does not like them. 3 times in my life I have had Anaphylactic shock after taking an antibiotic. Each time it was an antibiotic I had tolerated before and all of a sudden developed an alergy to. It's a freaky feeling if you have ever had it happen. I never take an antibiotic unless I am close to a hospital and have someone with me, it's that frightening.

What, antibiotics aren't lighthearted? It was a toss up, but I couldn't see this being argumentative, so it doesn't really belong in Too Hot. It's no fun over there if people can't take sides!

Just wait until the pro-biotic crowd shows up. Then it'll get ugly quick.

the reason for resistant strains of bacteria is mainly due to careless dosing, or careless administration of antibiotics
that is the reason you'll see the instruction 'take all antibiotic pills' in the prescription even if you are feeling better. An antibiotic works by attacking a bacteria in a specific stage of its replication cycle. If the prescription is stopped prior to completion of all pills a number of the bacteria will be exposed(during the susceptible stage of replication) by a dosage insufficient to kill the bacteria. The bacteria as a result develop resistance.

Old...yes; thank you. And the overuse is also affecting it. There will be a point where people will be dying because of infections. Actually, it's already happening, but it will get much. much worse. I've known quite a few people that have been right on the brink and almost died because of infections. I mean healthy people. Eventually when the masses start dying, scientists will start working harder. Until then...Go Gators.

It's called supply and demand. When there is a lot money to be made from better antibiotics investors will hire more scientist to work on development.

New "antibiotics" could be on the way that interfere in the way individual bacteria "communicates" with each other to work together and become an infection.

If the prescriber is poorly trained, which antibiotic would you recommend they use?

Do you recommend the "shotgun" approach to prescribing antibiotics and why or why not?

Absolutely. Hospitalization is the #1 cause of MRSA infections because that is where the stuff lives.
