"Kiffining"
Telling a recruit everything is great during the entire recruiting process, then a few days before he is supposed to start classes you tell him he can't.

Recruit decommits from USC after Lane Kiffin defers his scholarship three days before he’s to arrive on campus
Defensive end Kylie Fitts, a four-star recruit Rivals ranked seventh nationally at his position, was committed to USC and took extra high school classes so he could graduate early and enroll at the university in January.
Fitts talked to a couple USC coaches at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 5 and they said they were ready to have him on campus. But the following Monday, he received a call saying his scholarship was no longer available for the spring semester.
Fitts was supposed to be on campus on Jan. 10.
The Trojans didn't pull his scholarship entirely, but deferred him to the fall. However, since Fitts had already graduated high school, he had nowhere to go and didn't want to wait.

It's the Kiffin Method: keep crapping on everyone who has helped you or who believed in you and it will propel you farther up the ladder.
It would be great it the kid signs with UCLA and is responsible for handing USCw and kitten a loss or two.

How long Kiffin keeps this job and if he ever gets another one is irrelevant because of how much money he has already made in his undeserving life. It annoys the crap out of me that someone this dumb and undeserving has made more money in a few year of doing poorly at his job than most of us will in our lifetimes.

With only 15 scholarships to give, I think this will happen more often. Kiffie will need to bump kids off the bottom of the list if someone with more potential decides to choose the Prophylactics late in the process. I hope this shows all the uncommitted kids, and even those already committed, that Kiffin won't honor his word when it becomes inconvenient for him to do so.
I wonder if AD Pat Haden, aka "Mr Integrity" and "Mr. Straight Arrow", is getting whiplash by looking the other way while this is taking place. Here is a writeup about him after he got the AD job:
Quote:
Since that July day some two-and-a-half years ago, Haden has helped lift Troy out of the depths of NCAA probation purgatory and lingering suspicions concerning ethics in the football program. Through it all, Haden has been his typical high-road self while USC has ridden the white horse through the smoke of suspicion.
“We want to win in a way we can be proud of,” Haden told the San Marino City Club when he was addressed that group in September.. “The right way."
|
He must be very proud of Little Lane right now, or he would/should have said something.

Kiffen apparently is in the good graces of his AD, Pat Haden, so for now, he can keep doing what he's doing.
USC needs leadership from a quality coach who has experience and character in order to recruit the best players and rebuild the tarnished image due to the Pete Carroll and Reggie Bush transgressions.
Any school needs to give a recruit they pursue an opportunity to come in and EARN a playing spot without outright lying and deceiving a recruit to receive their commitment.
Regrettably, telling the truth doesn't happen as often as it should with all the pressures of winning and securing the best talent. However, the NCAA should really hammer a school for promising a committed recruit a scholarship and then taking it back if a better talent comes along unless there are grade issues or character issues that are discovered.

His antics remind me of all his secondary violations at tennessee*, none of them were awful enough alone but when you 20+ in a single season it paints the bigger picture. Unfortunately this will get written of as him being a prick and not amount to anything like switching jersey numbers to be colorado, not showing up for the sun bowl dinner, deflating footballs, lying about voting your team #1, accusing a coach of committing violations he didnt... well you get the picture. I'm not sure what kind of straw it's going to take to break this camel's back but with how he acts there's no way it isn't coming.
*I know this isnt a violation, although I'm not sure it shouldnt be
