I was just on Rivals and looked up qb's. He was not ranked among the top 35 pro-style qb's. Though I am not a big rankings guy and don't follow recruiting as many others do, it seems to me that we should be able to get a more highly ranked qb. I know Grier is tops for the following year, but can anyone give me a heads up on Staver? Is he better than his ranking, if not why couldn't we land a top 20 type qb??
Rankings don't mean everything. John Brantley was the #1 ranked pro-style QB
What is this supposed to mean? I take it as a shot against John. He was a great Gator and a hellava leader. The guy almost had 200 passing yards against Bama... In the first half!

Not sure that was a shot at John Brantley. I think the poster was just making the point that Brantley did not materialize into the quarterback that his ranking suggested he would.
I liked John, but perhaps the high expectations surrounding him hurt him in the long run.
In one list I put the following: Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerfell, Rex Grossman
In this list I put the following: Terry Dean, Doug Johnson, Chris Leak, John Brantley, Tim Tebow, Bobby Sabelhaus, Brock Berlin.
The first list were not the top shelf players and three of the best QBs we ever had.
The second list were highly ranked studs.....with Tim Tebow being the outlier, and I would say Leak was only because he won the national title (but probably under performed overall) The rest in the second list didn't live up to expectation or were outright flops....

A great leader?? I am sorry to say but imo, he showed the least amount of leadership for a starting qb that I can remember. One half does not make you a leader. Debose had half those passing yards in that game so does that make him one of our best wr's or leaders? To be honest, I do not feel JB lived up anywhere near what we were hoping for. I do not know if it was the system he was in or not but he was definitely not a leader. He showed about as much emotion as a 1 dollar bill.

"hellava leader" and "fetal position" have never gone together very well.

You've got no idea what you're talking about with Chris Leak. Leak was a hell of a quarterback for UF. He played for a different OC each of his first three years as a Gator. Nobody gave him a chance to do much under urban's spread offense. But when he had more than one year playing for the same OC, we saw what he was capable of with some continuity. To say he underperformed is absurd.
Well its pretty simple we had two sophomore QB's on the roster this year and not a lot of kids wanted to come sit behind them for two year. The staff missed on a lot of QB targets. In the summer a bunch of kids threw for the coaches and Starver got the scholarship. Starvers ranking is probably about right but he has a lot of physical tools to work with strong arm and great frame. He has some mechanical issues and decision making to work on. We will find a decent starter out of Mournhinweg Starver and Grier.

Leak was the number 1 player in high school football. He spent much of his career in Gainesville throwing some of the most beautiful under thrown balls I ever saw, a perpetual deer in the headlights look, and sliding two yards shy of the first down. Yes his senior year was above average, the rest average to middling.
Tebow was the only high ranked stud we have had that truly lived up to the billing and then some

Staver* is a 4 star in the top 15 on ESPN, and rivals has him as a 3 star not in the top 35. Now I'm not a professional but that's a big gap, so who's right here?!?!

Please don't bring up decision making, you know that is my weakness!! I am fighting to leave that alone.

I forgot the guys name but the head ESPN analyst fell in love with Starver at some camp. The tape tells a different story. Max has very high upside its just his mechanics are all over the place. Lets see what Pease can do. Max is going to come in be a good teammate and work hard thats all you can ask.

It could be quite the predicament if he gets better and becomes the starter after Driskel... Then what about Grier? Or do you see him being the next starter no matter what..
