Jindal: Eliminate income and corporate taxes
But increase sales tax, the most regressive tax there is. Yes, let the poor people take care of it ...
Quote:
Gov. Bobby Jindal is proposing to eliminate Louisiana's income and corporate taxes and pay for those cuts with increased sales taxes, the governor's office confirmed Thursday. The governor's office has not yet provided the details of the plan.
"The bottom line is that for too long, Louisiana's workers and small businesses have suffered from having a state tax structure that is too complex and that holds back economic prosperity," Jindal said in a statement released by his office. "It's time to change that so people can keep more of their own money and foster an environment where businesses want to invest and create good-paying jobs."

That'd be awesome in Louisiana. It's small enough that most of the population wouldn't have too much trouble shopping out of state.
Sign me up for opening a MegaLowMart on the state line if this gets passed.

Great idea by Jindal - would like to see us do away with all taxes and just have a national sales tax

Income tax = State-managed neo-slavery
Corporate tax = Clown economics
Jindal's got part of the equation correct, but then goes and blows it on the rest.

Is sales tax, generally, really more "regressive" than the stupidity/gullibility tax, or cigarette taxes, or the gas tax? Just sayin'.
I would love to see a state adopt the FairTax model, of course, the rate would have to be recalculated along whatever the aggregate imbedded state level taxes it would be replacing as well as state income tax, as well as what threshold it would want to apply a prebate to.

If the Fair Tax guys would have the balls to admit what they're really proposing, they might have a chance. But they don't.
30%=23% ... sure it does. Only if you're pretending.

23% is, was, and always will be the apples to apple's way to discuss a crapload of imbedded, price inclusive taxes. No amount of prevarication changes that. Only reason anybody ever came up with mewling about 30% is to make the real brain trusts like Obama Phone lady think "what, they withhold 10% income tax and I pay 6% at the register and now these guys want another 30%?". Somehow the fact that the 10% goes away completely and most of that "30%" is offset in tax compliance costs she is already paying before the 6% gets lost. I am sure that is a totally unintentional omission whenever the community organizers talk about the evil rich guy and his "Fairtax".

BS. we've always figured sales tax this way: If something cost $1 dollar and the added tax is 30 cents, it's a 30 percent sales tax.
The Fair Tax folks have tried to pretend that because the 30 cents tax is only 23% of the final $1.30 price, that the tax is only 23%.
It's really hard to say that with a straight face, isn't it?

You don't have to pretend not to understand here. If you are trying to explain to people that X% of what they already pay, pre sales tax, is going to go away and be replaced by Y%, pre sales tax, you are going to quote both X and Y inclusively, or exclusively. Not one inclusively and one exclusively. And you certainly won't pretend that X doesn't even exist unless your intention is to deceive and defraud the naive audience.

Pretend? You guys are pretending that 30 cents sales tax on a dollar is 23 percent. "See, we put the tax in before, so it's really not 30 percent ..."

Sigh. Maybe it is just something you don't know how to turn off. FairTax supporters should just counter by quoting the embedded tax costs currently at market exclusively as well -- "did you know that you pay an average of a 28.2% tax on what the real price of everything you buy, even before the put sales tax on the register? Well, if we replace that average rate with a set 30%, we can also get rid of the income tax, estate tax, dividend tax, suntan tax, etc..."

river- no one is saying there are not some bugs to work out with the
Fair Tax- the best thing about the fair tax is that EVERYONE who buys a new item in this country will contribute to our tax base- in our State-everyone who buys something pays a state sales tax with a few exceptions(botrtled water is not taxed as are a few other items)
we are in a huge hole and EVERYONE NEEDS TO CONTRIBUTE
our current tax code is so damned fubared it is ree dik uh luss

how are income taxes calculated? ----inclusively
the fair tax is replacing the income tax
therefore, you calculate it inclusively, so you can compare them accurately
its really pretty simple
your side has never grasped this simple concept....

Ha are you crazy? Why should the "poor" pay anything? About 50% of this county pays no federal tax. Do your really think the left would force a fair sales tax? And I bunny eared poor because even in America poor is 10 times better than most of the world.
