This probably depends most on Rainey's girlfriend.

In no way do I condone this and to be clear a guy should never slap a girl, but she was trying to take his cell phone, doesn't he have a legal right to protect his property?

Is she going to try to press charges? But what's his penalty going to be for a slap to the face? And it's unclear what the circumstances were, but if the incident was started by her entering the roommates car without permission, possibly to take Rainey's phone that didn't belong to her, she may well have broken some laws herself in the process.
Again, I'm not saying what Rainey did was acceptable by any means, but my guess is that this gets taken care outside of the courts.

I can see her not pressing charges, but if she stays with him, she is really dumb...

I wonder...if he'd slapped a guy in an altercation over his cell phone would we even hear about it?

Does slapping someone who took your cell phone constitute protecting your property?

In general discussion, you could argue that this doesn't deserve too big of a punishment, but Rainey has proven a pattern of abuse and it seems that he doesn't have a healthy relationship with women. He needs to a) be taught a lesson by harsher punishment or b) be forced to take some kind of class/program that will help him stay out of this kind of trouble in the future.

In general discussion, you could argue that since there were no visible injuries, the cops and her lawyers will more than likely recommend that she not press charge. Especially since she could probably be charged with attempted theft which caused Rainey's actions.
I totally agree that Rainey needs help and I stated that in post #15.

I wasn't bashing your stance. I was just using your line of questioning to expand my point of view.
I think the problem with these "smaller" incidents is that they get swept under the rug and that down the line it could lead to a real serious problem.
Think about what you (everyone, not atlgator) would do if someone took your cell phone. You might have some choice words. You might even chase/follow them to try to get it back. Not sure what part of him thought it would be okay to get physical.
The point being that because of the slaps on the wrist, people don't see the downside to this type of behavior and seem to keep doing it. Athletes in particular.

To be fair, I think she has about three inches and sixty pounds on him.

Rainey kept falling down? No way.
I've seen this move before, let me guess.... it was just CR in open space with only this string bean of a girl between him and paydirt, he puts on a wicked spin move, she barely touches the protector on the end of his shoelace, BAM! he goes down.

As mentioned above...I think the law is to easy on first offenders...often making the second offense more likely.

Neither party suffered visible injuries from the encounter, Rainey and the female victim have been in a dating relationship for approximately nine months, Tobias said.

so he fell to the ground when he slapped her and fell to the ground when he got the purse? I guess a gust of wind would knock him over

I hope our coaching staff can make this happen.

You mean like Rolondo McClain?

But the real summary is Rainey is a POS, as mentioned above. There's no need to hit or threaten a woman because you're having relationship issues.

This! POS indeed!
